Is there truly a concept of destiny, or is it merely a product of chance? This question lingers in the air as we follow the journey of a U.S. Marine, Logan Thibault, portrayed by Zac Efron, who feels he has defied the odds during his three tours in Iraq. The film begins amid the chaos of warfare, where Logan finds himself in a life-altering firefight. Crucial to the narrative is a photograph of an unknown woman, his perceived good luck charm, which he discovers in the midst of the turmoil.

After returning to America, Logan finds it increasingly difficult to reconnect with his family. Will Fetters highlights the profound sense of alienation veterans often face upon returning home, stating, “The disconnect these veterans feel when they come home is so immense. It takes a while to get back into the rhythm of life. Their once usual surroundings feel alien. Nothing will ever be the same.”

Compelled by a desire to meet the woman in the photograph, who he believes saved his life, Logan embarks on a journey from Colorado to Louisiana with his loyal dog, Zeus. Upon arriving, he encounters Beth, played by Taylor Schilling, who greets him with skepticism. Beth resides in her family’s property, managing a dog kennel alongside her grandmother, Ellie, portrayed by Blythe Danner. Despite Beth’s reservations about Logan, Ellie hires him to assist at the kennel after observing his rapport with Zeus, hinting at potential motivations beyond just help.

Logan’s arrival also positively impacts Beth’s seven-year-old son, Ben, who quickly forms a bond with him. Ben revels in their chess matches and showcases his magic tricks, while Logan encourages his passion for violin—much to the chagrin of Ben’s father, Deputy Sheriff Keith Clayton, who uses his authority and their son as tools for intimidation against Beth. Tensions rise as Keith grows increasingly resentful of Logan’s presence in his family, setting the stage for a compelling narrative about love, trust, and the quest for connection amidst life’s uncertainties.
