The Last Survivors

Ten years after rain ceases to fall, Kendal tends to the gravely ill Dean in a dry Oregon wasteland. They struggle to find water and avoid marauders who patrol the crisis-ridden landscape. Kendal remains determined to protect Dean even as survival grows increasingly perilous.

Kendal leaves her home after hearing a cry for help on a two-way radio. The call leads to a trap meant to lure nearby families, and marauders slaughter the others. She hides as the violence unfolds and returns home under cover of darkness.

As wells dry up, Dean theorizes that the warlord Carson has drilled into the aquifer to drain water for himself. Carson runs a small compound advertised as a safe haven. Grace tells Kendal she has joined Carson, hoping to secure medicine for Dean, while Kendal remains skeptical.

Grace urges Kendal to come with her and Gabriel to Carson's compound, believing there is medicine for Dean. Kendal stays cautious and hides when Carson arrives, wary of what the offer may cost them all.

Carson abruptly kills Gabriel's entire family, declaring that only Gabriel remains salvageable given the water crisis. Gabriel, horrified, reluctantly agrees to turn in a hidden relative to appease Carson. Kendal escapes after killing a sentry during the chaos.

Kendal visits Alby, a lone boy who prefers to survive on his own. She tells him of Dean's plan to escape via a nearly repaired Cessna, but Alby asks her not to visit him to avoid drawing Carson's attention. The plan to reach safety through air travel takes shape in her mind.

Kendal secures the proper distributor cap from a car inside Carson's compound and brings it back home. On arrival, she discovers three survivors wandering onto their property seeking water. Dean urges Kendal to share what they have, though Kendal remains wary of their motives.

Dean, barely able to walk, convinces Kendal to donate water to the strangers. The visitors return shortly after, revealed as opportunists who intend to steal the remaining water. Kendal's suspicions prove warranted as the threat unfolds.

Dean shoots the intruders to protect Kendal and their scarce water supply, killing them before they can strike again. The violence underscores how dangerous their world has become. Carson's interest in the area tightens as he tracks the gunfire.

Carson sends his men to investigate the gunfire and confront Kendal. In the ensuing skirmish, Dean fights back and kills several Carson's men before they kill him. The loss deepens Kendal's resolve to escape.

Filled with fury, Kendal escapes from Carson's men and retrieves a katana from a grave at Grace's farm. Now armed, she returns to the house and eliminates the intruders left behind, including a masked priest and Gabriel.

Kendal finds that Carson has abducted Alby, and she attacks Carson's compound to rescue him, slaughtering all of Carson's henchmen in the process. The confrontation leaves only Kendal, Carson, Brooke, and Alby remaining.

In a brutal showdown, Kendal fights Carson and kills him with the katana after a tense struggle. Carson's daughter Brooke nearly defeats Kendal but Kendal breaks free and stabs Brooke with the sword.

Kendal and Alby slip away to the Cessna, insert the distributor cap, and start the plane. Before boarding, Alby asks about Dean; Kendal tells him that Dean is staying behind to keep him safe. They lift off, leaving the harsh landscape and the memory of Dean below.
