The Round Up

During the summer of 1942, France is under German occupation and Jews are obliged to wear the yellow star. In the Butte Montmartre district of Paris, two Jewish families live among their neighbors, navigating a tense social landscape where some try to protect them by hiding, while others insult and belittle them. The story centers on the Weismann family, with Schmuel Weismann Gad Elmaleh at the heart of the household, and their relatives and friends who share in the fear and uncertainty of the moment. The neighborhood buzzes with a mix of sympathy, hostility, and everyday struggle, painting a vivid picture of life under threat.

On the night of July 16 to 17, a precarious political agreement between the Nazis and the French authorities sets in motion a dramatic roundup of Jews. The Velodrome d’Hiver becomes a place of sudden arrest for many, and the Butte Montmartre community is not spared. The Weismann family and their neighbors are seized after several failed attempts to escape, and the events that follow cast a long shadow over their lives. In the midst of the chaos, Annette Monod Mélanie Laurent, a nurse who meets Joseph and Noé, emerges as a beacon of care and quiet resolve.

Inside the Vel d’Hiv, conditions are stark and unsanitary: there is little water, crowding is extreme, and basic necessities must be shared with everyone who has something to spare. Despite the crowded fences and the fear in every corner, acts of small mercy appear—firesfighters, led by Captain Pierret Thierry Frémont, intervene at moments to restore some measure of order, and letters entrusted to trusted hands are discreetly passed along as a fragile thread of connection to the outside world.

After two harrowing days, those rounded up are transported to a transit camp in Beaune-la-Rolande, Loiret, where the situation deteriorates further. Food is scarce and of poor quality, illness spreads, and the psychological toll grows heavier with each passing day. The families are eventually deported again, this time toward extermination camps, leaving the little ones to cling to hope that their parents’ voices might guide them to safety. Among the children, Annette redoubles her efforts to shelter and care for them, even as the grim reality of their fate gnaws at every moment.

The story follows the children’s perilous journey as their world fractures around them. Noé ‘Nono’ Zygler [Mathieu Di Concetto] becomes a focal point, while others in the community—the Weismann clan, including Rachel Weismann [Rebecca Marder], Charlotte Weismann [Charlotte Driesen], and Sura Weismann [Raphaëlle Agogué]—live with the weight of what is happening to their families. The narrative also touches on Dina Traube [Anne Brochet] and Dr. David Sheinbaum [Jean Reno], whose roles intersect with the ward and its families in moments of crisis and concern. The tension between survival and humanity plays out against the backdrop of a city increasingly deaf to the pleas of those being displaced.

As the desperation grows, a doctor’s warning about extermination camps amplifies the urgency. Annette’s pursuit of the children on a deportation train becomes a defining, heartbreaking moment; she arrives too late to intervene as the trains depart. Yet there are survivors who manage to slip away and find refuge with strangers who choose compassion over complicity. Joseph finds a path to safety through a combination of luck, secrecy, and the support of others who believed in keeping hope alive. Noé also escapes, his fate hanging in the balance until a pair of compassionate rescuers take him in. The toll of the events is vast, but the thread of resilience persists.

By 1945, with the war drawing to a close, the survivors begin to rebuild their lives. The film closes on a note of reluctant relief as Joseph and Noé, scarred but alive, reunite with Annette at the Lutetia, a Parisian hotel that becomes a haven for those who endured the camps. The story honors memory, endurance, and the fragile, stubborn persistence of hope in the face of unspeakable loss, inviting viewers to reflect on the costs of hatred and the enduring power of care in times of crisis.
