In the dusty heartland of 1960s Nebraska, two brothers embody a stark contrast in their moral values as they become enmeshed in a poignant story of redemption and revenge. Deputy Sheriff Joe Roberts, a man burdened by his personal battles, had once sought to make a living from the land until a bank foreclosure shattered his dreams. Taking on the role of law enforcement was Joe’s attempt to provide for his young wife, Maria, and child, though the crushing weight of his responsibilities often overwhelms him.

The film commences with an adrenaline-pumping car chase that culminates in heart-wrenching tragedy, forcing Joe to confront the ethical turmoil surrounding a lethal act of self-defense. The community stands divided; some view him as a hero while others cast him as a villain. Meanwhile, Frank Roberts, Joe’s estranged brother, comes back from Vietnam, burdened with an unquenchable sense of restlessness that leads him down a path of self-destructive behavior.

Struggling to overcome his troubled history, Frank begins construction work and pledges to change his life for the better. Yet, old habits cling to him, leading to a series of legal entanglements that place him at odds with Joe. The tension between the brothers escalates sharply when Frank’s wife goes into labor, culminating in a violent confrontation at a local bar that concludes with the brutal murder of the bartender.

As Joe is left to navigate the aftermath of this chaos, Frank embarks on a desperate flight for freedom, igniting a perilous chase across state lines.
