What Happens in Running on Empty: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Running on Empty (1988) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Annie Pope and Arthur Pope are on the run after participating in the 1971 anti-war protest bombing of a napalm laboratory. The act inadvertently blinds and paralyzes a janitor who was not supposed to be there. Since then, they survive with the help of an underground network of supporters who provide money and shelter as they assume new identities. At the time of the incident, their son Danny was two years old; now, in his late teens, the family — which includes a younger son named Harry — keeps moving, never staying in one place for long.

Danny, a pianist of remarkable talent, captures the attention of his school music teacher, Mr. Phillips, who begins to pry into Danny's personal life and pushes him toward auditioning for Juilliard. The teacher also questions why records from Danny's previous school are missing. In parallel, Danny falls in love with Lorna, the teacher's teenage daughter, which adds a fragile, human dimension to their precarious existence.

As the pressure mounts to chart his own path, Danny reveals the family secret to Lorna. Annie, for her part, starts to come to terms with the need to let him go, even as she risks their safety by contacting her estranged father to arrange a home for Danny if they should decide to leave him behind.

When Arthur hears on the radio that one of their underground colleagues has been shot and killed while fleeing authorities, he begins to fear that staying together could endanger Danny more than it would help him. He concludes that pursuing his dreams may be the safer course, and the family decides to leave Danny behind while they move on to their next identity in a new town.
