Richie Furst, a once-promising Wall Street professional, faces a dilemma when his past hinders his eligibility for tuition assistance at Princeton. To finance his master’s degree, he begins referring students to online gambling sites, earning a cut from their losses. However, his activities draw the ire of the dean, who threatens to expel him. In a desperate bid to pay his tuition, Richie puts his poker skills to the test in the online gambling arena but tragically loses everything to a skilled cheat, which he proves through meticulous statistical analysis.
Determined to confront the mastermind behind his losses, Richie travels to Costa Rica to face Ivan Block, the kingpin of a vast online gambling empire. Upon reviewing Richie’s evidence, Ivan realizes the software has been rigged by some of his coders, leading him to take immediate action against them. Recognizing Richie’s talents, Ivan offers him a lucrative position, promising millions annually for his expertise in managing the gambling site. Meanwhile, Richie finds himself drawn to Rebecca Shafran, Ivan’s former lover, and their relationship grows, with Ivan showing no signs of jealousy.
However, the situation takes a dark turn when FBI agent Shavers captures Richie, coercing him into aiding a case against Ivan. Although he lacks jurisdiction in Costa Rica, Shavers employs dubious methods to manipulate Richie. Ivan reveals that everyone connected to him eventually faces Shavers’ pressure, solidifying Richie’s precarious position. As part of Ivan’s shrewd tactics, Richie is forced to blackmail Shecky, a business associate caught in a scandal, ensuring Ivan’s control remains unchallenged.
As time unfolds, Richie becomes aware of the unsavory practices within Ivan’s operations. An alarming incident occurs when Ivan sends Richie to bribe the local gaming director with an insultingly low amount, resulting in a violent retaliation that leaves Richie shaken. Ivan’s ruthless nature is further exposed when he disposes of Herrera and his accomplice in a crocodile-infested lake—albeit temporarily saving them from certain death afterward.
Compounding Richie’s troubles, his friend Andrew Cronin, who develops software for Ivan, uncovers a shocking Ponzi scheme that puts the players’ funds at risk, revealing that Ivan is merely using their deposits as his personal bank account. After Andrew mysteriously vanishes, having been attacked, Richie grows increasingly wary. Ivan, sensing Richie’s wavering loyalty, manipulates him further by bringing his father to Costa Rica, effectively holding him hostage as leverage.
In a twist of betrayal, when Richie attempts to escape, drugs are covertly planted in his luggage, and Shavers offers him an ultimatum—cooperate or face dire consequences. A police officer reveals the local authorities’ disdain for Ivan’s influence, pointing out his ability to evade justice through corruption and intimidation. With Rebecca turning against Ivan, Richie uncovers the full extent of Ivan’s deceit; all along, his life was a carefully orchestrated setup for Ivan’s escape, where Richie would bear the blame.
In a final act of defiance, Richie distributes significant bribes to local officials to secure a path for himself and Rebecca. As the day of Ivan’s planned exodus arrives, he receives a mocking phone call from Ivan, who gleefully announces his impending arrest. What Ivan doesn’t realize is that the pilot he bribed has betrayed him, diverting the plane to Puerto Rico, where Shavers and the authorities await.
As Ivan’s empire crumbles, Richie and Rebecca manage to escape, flying away in a private jet with crucial evidence left in Shavers’ possession, effectively sealing Ivan’s fate. It’s a whirlwind of deception, loyalty, and a fight for freedom that ultimately leads to Richie seizing control of his destiny.
