The Blind Side

For most of his childhood, 17-year-old Michael Oher struggles to find stability, bouncing between various foster homes due to his mother’s ongoing battle with drug addiction throughout Memphis, Tennessee. Each new placement only leads him to run away, until he finds himself on the couch of a friend’s father. Recognizing his potential, Burt Cotton (Ray McKinnon), the coach at Wingate Christian school, assists in enrolling both Michael and his friend. Despite Michael’s poor academic standing, Cotton sees beyond this and is drawn to his impressive physicality.

At his new school, Michael befriends a young boy named SJ (Jae Head), who’s the son of Leigh Anne Tuohy, an assertive interior designer married to the affluent Sean Tuohy. During a chance encounter, Leigh Anne spots Michael braving the cold outside the school gym and cannot allow him to fend for himself any longer. She welcomes him into her home for the night, which evolves into an invitation for the Thanksgiving holiday. As the days pass, Michael gradually becomes integrated into the Tuohy family, despite lingering doubts expressed by Leigh Anne’s wealthy friends regarding the situation, with one even implying her daughter Collins (Lily Collins) is at risk, which infuriates Leigh Anne.

In her quest to become Michael’s guardian, Leigh Anne learns of his challenging past, including his separation from his drug-addled mother at a tender age. Despite concerns over Michael’s initially low performance on aptitude tests, it turns out he possesses an extraordinary ability, ranking in the 98th percentile for “protective instincts.”

As his academic situation improves, Michael earns a spot on the school’s football team. His initial performance is rocky but transforms when Leigh Anne motivates him to harness his protective instincts and view his teammates as family. With Michael’s talent showcased in videos shared by SJ, college coaches come knocking. Realizing Michael needs a minimum 2.5 GPA for an NCAA Division I scholarship, Leigh Anne seeks out help from a tutor, [Miss Sue](Kathy Bates), and pushes Michael to succeed, resulting in a GPA of 2.52.

The Tuohys prefer the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) for Michael’s education, being alumni themselves. However, complications arise as Michael catches the interest of an NCAA investigator, who questions the involvement of the Tuohys, especially considering Michael’s high school coach has ties to Ole Miss. This leads to a confrontation where Michael doubts Leigh Anne’s intentions, feeling as though he might just be a pawn in her desire to boost her Alma mater’s football program.

Hurt and confused, Michael reflects on his past when he visits his biological mother’s apartment. Although he is welcomed by old friends, derogatory comments directed towards Leigh Anne and Collins spark a violent altercation, with Michael ultimately overwhelmed by emotion.

Desperate to find him, Leigh Anne embarks on a search after Michael reaches out. Their reunion is heartwarming, filled with an understanding that whichever path he chooses, she will be by his side. Michael ultimately reassures the investigator that his decision to attend Ole Miss is rooted in genuine choice, not obligation.

As the Tuohy family supports Michael’s transition to college life at Ole Miss, the movie concludes with a poignant farewell between Leigh Anne and Michael. The credits roll, highlighting the 2009 NFL Draft where the real Michael Oher is selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round, alongside images of Oher and the authentic Tuohy family, celebrating Oher’s remarkable journey in the NFL. The credits also pay tribute to director John Lee Hancock’s late father, a football player and coach who passed away in 2009.
