Luc Vu is a young Vietnamese Australian man in western Sydney’s Yagoona, driven by a deep love for rugby league. He’s unemployed after a factory closure and also the sole caregiver for his 11-year-old sister, Anne, following their mother’s death two years prior. After a disappointing job interview as a Holden car salesman, his day takes another turn when the Department of Community Services case worker, Alison Berry, arrives with troubling news: Anne’s primary school has filed a complaint about truancy and unpaid school fees, and Luc must defend himself in court. The pressure is intensified by his grandfather, Grandad, a Vietnam War veteran who does not accept failure or loss.

To secure custody, Luc vows to win the Holden Cup, a rugby league tournament, and he pulls together six friends—Lloydy, Boof, Donald, Shane, Terry, and Walid—to form a team. The seven of them, once part of the Yagoona High School squad, now struggle with unemployment and other social challenges, but they rebuild their camaraderie under Luc’s leadership and rechristen themselves the Yagoona Schooners. As captain, Luc begins tough training and the team’s first qualifier is held in Kirribilli. They initially trail, but a referee’s line about qualifying by a draw gives them hope, and they manage to draw the match and celebrate their first cup victory.

The Holden Cup kicks off in earnest, and the Schooners face their share of early trouble, especially in the opening game without their captain. Luc arrives at half-time, fires up the team with a rousing speech, and they surge to victory. From there, they ride a wave of strong performances and remarkable teamwork, winning every subsequent game and earning a place in the grand final. Throughout this journey, the tension around Anne’s future looms large, and Luc learns that his grandfather’s war stories may not be the whole truth, adding emotional weight to the race for the cup.

As the final approaches, the stakes rise: Alison informs Luc that Anne will likely be placed into foster care due to ongoing concerns about her care, and he discovers that Grandad’s wartime claims were not as he believed. On the day of the final, the rival coach Billy Major offers Luc a permanent contract with his team, but Luc declines, choosing the path that has brought his group together. Inside the dressing room, the team members voice their doubts and fears, yet ultimately confess that rugby is the one thing that gives them purpose, and they are sustained by the love and support of their families and the local community.

The grand final is a packed affair, with the Double Bay side featuring legendary players and a strong early lead. Yet the Schooners refuse to quit; they fight back, draw level in the second half, and in the final moments, they clinch the win with a late try. The stadium roars as Anne, Alison, and Grandad watch closely, and the crowd’s energy mirrors the team’s resilience. Back on the field, Donald and Shane help celebrate a new chapter as the team’s journey takes an unexpected turn toward practical triumphs off the field—Donald and Shane launching a small rubbish pickup venture—and Luc regains full custody of Anne. The seven teammates also celebrate a successful modeling opportunity with Lowes, marking the payoff of their hard work, loyalty, and the town’s unwavering support.
