While they continue to excel, Piccolo begins losing weight, which affects his performance on the field. Concerned, Coach Halas sends Piccolo to the hospital, where devastating news is revealed: he has been diagnosed with cancer and needs a lung operation.

In a touching speech to his teammates, Sayers motivates them to win their next game in honor of Piccolo, promising to present him with the game ball if they succeed. Visiting Piccolo in the hospital, the team is met with his signature humor; he cheekily references the famous phrase “Let’s blow one for the Gipper” during their conversation, maintaining his spirit in adversity.

As the Chicago Bears prepare to face off against the St. Louis Cardinals, Sayers learns from Joy that Piccolo is facing another critical surgery to remove his tumor. The weight of this news hangs heavily over Sayers as he contemplates his friend’s bravery.

Later on, when Sayers accepts the esteemed “George S. Halas Most Courageous Player Award,” he shockingly uses the moment to redirect the honor to Piccolo.
