Santiago Muñez is a talented footballer living in Los Angeles, navigating life as a Mexican undocumented immigrant who balances his dream with work on the side. He plays for a local team and earns money as a gardener for his father, Hernan, while also bussing tables at a Chinese restaurant. On a pivotal match day, Glen Foy—a former player and Newcastle United scout—recognizes Santiago’s potential and helps arrange a trial with the club. To reach England, Santiago scrapes together savings, but his father steals the money to invest in a truck for the family business, dismissing his son’s chances at a professional future. In a quiet act of faith, Santiago’s grandmother, Mercedes, secretly gives him money and urges him to leave for England before Hernan can intervene.

Upon arriving in Newcastle, Santiago stays with Glen and begins his trial under the watchful eyes of the club. The first days are rough; muddy pitches and pressure from teammates like Hughie McGowan test his resilience during a training match. Although the management is not instantly impressed, the manager, Erik Dornhelm, agrees to extend the trial to a full month at Glen’s request. To avoid jeopardizing his chances, Santiago lies about his asthma during a medical check with club nurse Roz Harmison, and the club offers him a one-month contract. The experience includes some rough moments with Hughie, yet he also forms a bond with another trialist, Jamie Drew. As Santiago adapts to the English game, a reserve match is scheduled to determine whether he will be signed on a longer-term basis.

Before a crucial reserve game, Santiago reaches for his inhaler only to have Hughie destroy it, triggering an asthma flare that unsettles him and foreshadows the challenges ahead. After another disappointing showing, Newcastle makes the difficult decision to let him go. On his way to the airport, a twist of fate introduces Gavin Harris, a talented but unruly player who has just joined Newcastle and misses training. Gavin learns about Santiago’s asthma and informs Dornhelm, who decides to give Santiago another chance, provided he seeks proper treatment. Santiago moves in with Gavin, and the two soon become friends while continuing to prove themselves in the reserves.

Santiago’s persistence pays off as he shines in the reserves and finally makes his first-team debut as a substitute against Fulham. He earns a crucial penalty that helps Newcastle win the match, a moment that is proudly broadcast on television and witnessed by Hernan. Yet the praise is tempered by criticism from Dornhelm, who cautions Santiago about selfishness on the pitch and urges him to pass more. Off the field, Santiago and Gavin celebrate too hard, and a drunken snapshot ends up in The Sun, igniting anger in Dornhelm. The strain of the season’s arc deepens as Jamie Drew suffers a career-ending injury, and the once-tight friendship between Santiago and Gavin begins to crack under pressure.

In a sudden personal blow, Hernan suffers a fatal heart attack, and the family pressure to return home intensifies. However, in a moment of resolve, Santiago abandons his flight and instead trains through the night at St James’ Park, a choice sparked by a conversation with Roz and the budding relationship that begins to bloom between them. Dornhelm then informs Santiago that he has been chosen to start the season’s final game against Liverpool, a clash that comes just ahead of the 2005 UEFA Champions League final between Liverpool and AC Milan.

Match day arrives with Newcastle striking first, but Liverpool answers quickly as the game progresses toward a dramatic finale. In the dying minutes, Santiago helps set up Gavin for an equalizer, though a draw won’t secure a place in the Champions League. With time almost up, Newcastle earns a free kick; Gavin passes it to Santiago, who scores a decisive goal to seal a 3–2 victory and clinch Newcastle’s place in the next season’s UEFA Champions League. Liverpool later secures their own path to the tournament by beating AC Milan in the Champions League final. After the whistle, Glen relays a call to Santiago from Mercedes, who relays that his father watched the Fulham match with pride, closing a loop on a journey defined by perseverance, personal loss, and the power of belief.
