Elphaba Cynthia Erivo returns to a wary Oz years after she defied The Wizard Jeff Goldblum and Madame Morrible Michelle Yeoh, escaping with the Grimmerie and earning the fearsome nickname Wicked Witch of the West. The Wizard’s soldiers have turned the Yellow Brick Road into a labor project, pressing the animals of Oz into service. In a defiant swoop, Elphaba frees the trapped creatures and terrifies the soldiers, reigniting the tension between those who worship control and those who crave freedom.

Oz is gripped by fear and propaganda. Morrible’s messaging supports a grim atmosphere, and the people live under the shadow of Elphaba’s supposed menace. Meanwhile, Glinda Ariana Grande has risen to work alongside the Wizard and Morrible, with Pfannee Bowen Yang and ShenShen Bronwyn James acting as her aides. Morrible reveals a gadget that makes bubbles float, a showy display meant to imply magic and buoy Glinda’s public image.

In a flashback, a young Young Glinda Scarlett Spears receives a birthday wand and learns she has no real magic. When a rainbow appears, the moment underscores her quiet sadness and her mother’s attempt to comfort her, foreshadowing the complex path Glinda will tread as she grows into power.

The Emerald City heralds a grand spectacle: the Yellow Brick Road’s unveiling, accompanied by fireworks and pageantry. Fiyero Jonathan Bailey, now Captain of the Gale Force, is surprised to be publicly linked in an engagement with Glinda, a front to placate public opinion while both secretly fear what Elphaba’s presence portends. The couple’s bond feels strategic, and Glinda senses Fiyero’s insistence may be more about appearances than affection.

Elphaba’s dramatic entrance interrupts the ceremony. She attempts a defiant stunt—writing “OUR WIZARD LIES” in the clouds—only to see Morrible overwrite the message with “OZ DIES,” deepening the sense of imminent danger. A chase erupts through the forest, with Fiyero leading the pursuit. In a moment of reverie, Elphaba imagines a future with Glinda, Fiyero, Nessarose, and Boq in a sunny field, a life far from the violent present.

Nessarose—the former governor of Munchkinland—now rules with Boq as her head guard. Elphaba’s use of the Grimmerie to enchant Nessarose’s ruby shoes grants her flight, an act that unintentionally unsettles Boq. The spell drains something from him and the heart he trusts, transforming Boq into the Tin Woodman. Elphaba departs, leaving Boq haunted and vengeful.

The wedding pageant draws the Ozian court to the Emerald City, but Elphaba’s reappearance forces a reckoning. She reunites with Glinda to press for animal freedom, and together they confront The Wizard and Morrible in a bid to shift Oz toward mercy. When Elphaba frees Chistery and the other creatures, chaos erupts at the ceremony. Fiyero and the guards try to subdue her with water, a trick they think will neutralize her power, but Fiyero pivots to aid Elphaba, encouraged by Glinda.

In the woods outside the city, the lovers admit their feelings and share a night together, while Glinda moves through the ruins with a heavy conscience. Morrible launches a devastating storm that also conjures a tornado, and a house from another world crashes into Munchkinland, trapping Nessa in its wake. Dorothy Gale appears—carried by the storm—while Glinda places Nessa’s shoes with Dorothy and sends her toward the Emerald City. Elphaba, furious, confronts Glinda and the looming threat of The Wizard, and the two clash with wand and broom until Fiyero and his soldiers arrive. They seize Elphaba’s freedom, but Fiyero chooses to aid her, and Glinda urges them to flee.

Back at Elphaba’s hideout, a desperate spell to save Fiyero from bleeding backfires and reshapes him into the Scarecrow. Dorothy joins Scarecrow Fiyero, Tin Man Boq, and the Cowardly Lion to confront The Wizard, who bargains wishes for their return with the enchanted broom. Boq rallies a mob against Elphaba, preaching blame and fear as Morrible’s true machinations remain hidden. Glinda, witnessing the mob’s fever, begins to question the path she walked, and she seeks out Morrible only to learn the deeper treachery behind the tornado and the chaos that has harmed Oz.

Realizing Morrible’s real power lies in fear, Glinda escapes to reach Elphaba. The two friends reaffirm a deep bond in the song “For Good,” choosing honesty and solidarity even as Elphaba contemplates surrender to the growing crowd. To protect Glinda’s reputation and to keep her safe, Elphaba asks Glinda to hide the truth of her survival. Dorothy’s appearance forces a grim decision, and a bucket of water seemingly ends Elphaba’s life, though Glinda remains overcome with tears at the loss.

Chistery surfaces to speak at last, delivering a green elixir keepsake to Glinda that hints at Elphaba’s enduring legacy. The Wizard’s past indiscretions and lies come to light when Glinda confronts him with the elixir—the revelation that he is Elphaba’s biological father, a painful secret that compels Glinda to depose the Wizard and seize leadership for herself. Morrible faces consequences as Glinda ascends as the new ruler of Oz, her crown tempered by the truth she has learned.

With Oz’s future now in Glinda’s hands, she tells the Munchkins that the animals and the magical world they share belong back in Oz, and that the Grimmerie will stay in her possession as a safeguard and source of guidance. Elphaba and Fiyero slip away to begin a quiet life together, their love a quiet legacy to be carried forward, while Glinda rules with a tempered justice, always remembering Elphaba’s courage. The Grimmerie hums with new life in Glinda’s care, and the two women carry the memory of their friendship into a future where Oz remains a place of possibility rather than fear.
