At the Mid-County Community Center, a coach leaves the ragtag martial arts group, and the center’s leader Charlie searches for someone who can steady the team. The door opens for Jimmy Lee, a former mixed martial arts champion whose own career stalled three years earlier after an accident. He agrees to coach the kids—Wyatt, Leticia, Raymond, Ricky, and brothers Alex and Sean—while quietly wrestling with whether he can make a comeback himself. Each child carries their own weight: poverty, bullying, the ache for approval, and the shadow of losing a parent. As Jimmy begins, he isn’t an instant hero to them, but he listens, notices their struggles, and slowly earns their trust. In time, his presence becomes a steadying force, and the kids start to see that he understands more about their lives than just fighting.

When the team reaches their first competition, a sharp clash with Ted Barrett, a childhood rival and now the coach of the three-time national karate champions, the Beverly Hills Scorpions, tests everyone. Ted still guards a long-standing grudge and wields his fame to sway people’s opinions, even as his own son Eric voices doubts. The kids feel the sting of humiliation, and Jimmy vows to find sponsorship to lift them up. But Ted seizes the opportunity to blacklist Jimmy by spreading rumors that make sponsors think twice. Just as defeat threatens to crush them, Big Mama—a food truck owner and an old friend of Jimmy—steps in with a sponsorship offer. To secure it, Jimmy makes a humiliating move at the next competition, arriving dressed as a hot dog to prove his dedication and his willingness to go to any length for the team. The kids are initially embarrassed, but when Big Mama explains the hardships Jimmy endured to secure their support—and how no one else would take a chance on them—they choose to embrace the new name the team receives: the Underdogs.

With renewed resolve, the squad begins to train harder, and they welcome a new member, Rasheed, a quiet but volatile presence whose mother wants him to channel his energy into self-discipline. As the team grows stronger, they start winning more often, and a major tournament looms that would pit the Underdogs against the Scorpions in a high-stakes showdown. To add balance and rhythm to their technique, aunt Valerie steps in to teach the group ballet, helping their movement flow more gracefully. The unexpected twist comes when several Scorpions members discover the Underdogs at the dance studio and secretly post footage on YouTube, inviting fresh taunting. Rasheed, who also faces a speech problem, endures more teasing and ends up suspended after a confrontation. Jimmy visits him at home, and the two find common ground, reinforcing the idea that their bond is built on more than just fighting.

Jimmy’s own path takes a momentous turn when he is offered a chance to return to MMA. He leaves the day before the big showdown to consider the contract, travels to Las Vegas, and realizes that MMA may no longer be the life he wants. He returns in time to stand with the team as they prepare for their ultimate test. The competition unfolds as a series of one-on-one matchups that keep both sides determined, leading to a deadlock that requires a group kata as the tiebreaker. The Scorpions score 49, but the Underdogs are determined to rise above. Ted attempts to sabotage their performance by cutting the music and short-circuiting their radio, drawing disapproval from Eric. Yet Jimmy rallies Rasheed’s brother and his friends to create an a cappella beat, enabling the Underdogs to perform the kata successfully. Their flawless routine earns them a perfect score of 50, sealing the victory.

In the aftermath, mutual respect begins to replace rivalry. Eric and the Scorpions acknowledge the win with goodwill, and the teams agree to consider each other friends. Ted, exposed by his own unsportsmanlike conduct, loses his sponsor’s support, while the Scorpions remain unaffected by the fallout from Ted’s behavior. The journey leaves the Underdogs not only with a championship but also with a sense of unity and resilience that comes from having faced hardship together and chosen to support one another every step of the way.
