Echoing the biblical tale of Saul, the film follows a high‑school bully whose cruelty ends after a life‑altering accident. Forced to confront his past, he seeks forgiveness from those he’s hurt and strives to become the person he always ought to have been. A later 2007 version replaces evangelical themes with Mormon ones and renames the cast while using the same actors.

Hannah is a young girl who faces many challenges and struggles with feelings of abandonment, low self-esteem, and a difficult past. The story begins in the gym of Brookshire Christian School, where the boys basketball team narrowly loses a tense championship game in the final seconds. Coach John Harrison (/actor/alex-kendrick) consoles his son, Ethan, who missed the game-winning shot, and assures him that next year’s team will be stronger since their best players will return, unlike their opponents who will have graduated.

Meanwhile, the town of Franklin faces tough times as news breaks via television that the manufacturing plant—the town’s largest employer—is relocating to another city. This causes concern among the school staff, with one coach lamenting the loss of the football team, while others remain hopeful that basketball, with its returning players, will remain unaffected.

In a different part of town, a scene unfolds of high school boys playing basketball outdoors in the park. A young girl, Hannah Scott (/actor/aryn-wright-thompson), passing by, notices an expensive pair of headphones left on a bench. When a boy realizes his headphones are missing and looks around, he spots Hannah. The chase ensues as sheRuns through the woods, leading the boys on a frantic pursuit. She manages to hide behind rocks, trying to mask her heavy breathing with an inhaler, revealing her struggle with asthma. Once the boys give up, she quietly slips away to her grandmother’s house.

At her grandmother’s place, she is confronted about the stolen headphones, which her grandmother assumes she took. Hannah secretly hides other stolen items in a box, hinting at a pattern of theft, perhaps driven by her circumstances. Meanwhile, Principal Olivia Brooks (/actor/priscilla-shirer) informs Coach Harrison that the school must fill some staffing gaps, including coaching cross country. Despite his initial reluctance about the sport, Coach Harrison agrees to coach, especially after Hannah shows up for tryouts, with her grandmother’s signed permission note.

Hannah’s first run at tryouts is modest, and her performance raises doubts, but Coach Harrison, concerned about her potential, visits a former cross country runner, Thomas Hill (/actor/cameron-arnett), who is blind due to complications from diabetes. Hill shares his own story of struggle and redemption, challenging Harrison to discover his true identity beyond being just a coach or teacher. During their conversation, Harrison learns that Hill’s story is intertwined with his own past, revealing that Hill’s baby girl, who was born on Valentine’s Day, is Hannah—his own daughter, a daughter he abandoned after her birth.

Devastated but determined, Harrison seeks the truth from Principal Brooks and Hannah’s grandmother. They disclose the difficult history—that her biological father is Hill, and that her grandmother has been sheltering her from the truth to protect her. The emotional weight of this revelation is intense, especially for Hannah, who feels betrayed and confused. With the help of Jesus Christ, Hannah finds solace, reading the Bible and discovering she is loved, chosen, forgiven, and redeemed.

Throughout this journey, Hannah begins to understand her worth beyond her circumstances. When her grandmother temporarily leaves for work, Hannah visits Hill in the hospital. There, Hill asks for Hannah’s forgiveness, and she, in turn, offers forgiveness to him. Their emotional reunion marks a turning point. Principal Brooks prays with Hannah, guiding her to accept her identity in Christ, which empowers her to forgive and reconcile.

The story moves forward to the regional cross-country meet, where a debate about earbuds arises—initially opposed but eventually approved to help Hannah, who now runs with renewed purpose. During the state championship race, Coach Harrison gives Hannah a special earpiece with a recording from her father. As she runs, she hears his voice coaching her, expressing love, pride, and encouragement. Inspired and confident, Hannah pushes herself to the limit, overtaking competitors with her best race ever. She ultimately wins, falling over the finish line exhaustion but exhilaration.

Her victory is celebrated by her friends and family, including her grandmother, who stays to witness her race. Afterwards, at the hospital, Hannah places her medal around Hill’s neck, sharing a heartfelt moment. Coach Harrison reminds Hill that Hannah’s win isn’t just a medal but a testament to her resilience and faith. The film concludes with a poignant flash-forward six years later, showing Hannah sharing her story in a group, running cross country in college, and listening to a recording of her father’s prayer—a message of love and hope she treasures deeply.

This inspiring story highlights themes of forgiveness, redemption, faith, and the power of perseverance. Despite hardships and past mistakes, everyone can find purpose and peace through love, forgiveness, and God’s grace. Hannah’s journey from abandonment to victory reminds us all that with faith and support, rebuilding life can lead to extraordinary new beginnings.
