His raw talent on the local pitch catches the eye of Glen Foy, a former Newcastle United scout who helps set up a trial with the English club. To fund the trip to England, Santiago saves his earnings, but his father aggressively diverts the money to fuel the family business, doubting his son’s dream of turning pro. Santiago’s grandmother, Mercedes, secretly lends him money and urges him to depart before Hernan learns of it.
Arriving in Newcastle, Santiago moves in with Glen and begins a demanding trial. The conditions are muddy and unforgiving, with a push from Hughie McGowan during a training match testing his resolve. The game unfolds with Newcastle taking an early lead, but Liverpool answers and the clock ticks down to the finale. In the dying moments, Santiago sets up Gavin Harris for an equalizer, yet a draw wouldn’t be enough for the Champions League.
