Santiago Muñez is a gifted footballer and undocumented immigrant living in Los Angeles, balancing work as a gardener with his father Hernan Muñez and a job as a busboy at a Chinese restaurant. His raw talent on the local pitch catches the eye of Glen Foy, a former Newcastle United scout who helps set up a trial with the English club. To fund the trip to England, Santiago saves his earnings, but his father aggressively diverts the money to fuel the family business, doubting his son’s dream of turning pro. Santiago’s grandmother, Mercedes, secretly lends him money and urges him to depart before Hernan learns of it.
Arriving in Newcastle, Santiago moves in with Glen and begins a demanding trial. The conditions are muddy and unforgiving, with a push from Hughie McGowan during a training match testing his resolve. The club’s manager, Erik Dornhelm, reluctantly agrees to extend the trial to a month after Glen pleads on his behalf. During a medical, Santiago lies about his asthma to the club nurse, Roz Harmison, fearing that the truth could derail his chances; he is nevertheless offered a one-month contract.
He slowly finds his footing and befriends Jamie Drew, another player on trial, as he adapts to life in England. A decisive reserve match looms to determine whether he will be signed on full time. Before the game, Santiago tries to use his inhaler, but Hughie McGowan destroys it, triggering an asthma flare and a below-par performance. Newcastle ultimately decides to let him go.
On the way to the airport, fate crosses with Gavin Harris, a talented yet impulsive new teammate who has just joined Newcastle. Gavin learns about Santiago’s asthma and informs Erik. The coach allows Santiago to stay on the condition that he seeks proper treatment. The two players grow closer, moving in together and forming a strong, if imperfect, friendship that will shape the season ahead.
With several promising showings in the reserves, Santiago earns a chance to debut for the first team as a substitute against Fulham. He earns a crucial penalty that helps secure the win, a moment that Hernan Muñez sees on television with pride. Yet Erik cautions him about selfish play, urging him to distribute the ball more often. A night out with Gavin ends in controversy when a drunken photo of them appears in The Sun, straining Santiago’s image and his relationship with the team’s manager.
The mood darkens as Jamie suffers a career-ending injury, and the strain of the developing rift between Santiago and Gavin grows. The family’s sorrow deepens when Hernan Muñez suffers a sudden heart attack, forcing Santiago to confront the possibility of returning home. Instead, he finds renewed purpose in a late-night training session at St James’ Park after a heartfelt talk with Roz Harmison, and the pair begin a romance.
Erik then informs Santiago that he has been chosen to start the season’s final game against Liverpool, a match that could seal a place in the UEFA Champions League. The game unfolds with Newcastle taking an early lead, but Liverpool answers and the clock ticks down to the finale. In the dying moments, Santiago sets up Gavin Harris for an equalizer, yet a draw wouldn’t be enough for the Champions League. Then, a late Newcastle free kick is awarded, and Santiago Muñez delivers the winning strike, sending Newcastle to a 3–2 victory and a berth in the next season’s Champions League.
Liverpool later clinches their own path by beating Milan, but the focus here remains on the triumph at St James’ Park. After the final whistle, Glen relays a call from Mercedes informing Santiago that his father watched his Fulham performance, a moment that cements the sense that his family—and his journey—have finally found their footing.
