In Boise, Idaho, during the year 1987, football coach Jim White (Kevin Costner) finds himself in a predicament after an underwhelming game. After chastising his team, a confrontation escalates when Jim throws a shoe at a locker, accidentally injuring one of his players. This incident leads the White family, including Jim's wife Cheryl (Maria Bello) and their two daughters, Julie and Jamie, to relocate to McFarland, California, where they settle in a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood.
