The Amityville Horror

On a haunting autumn evening in 1975, the dark legacy left by Ronald DeFeo Jr. at 412 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York continues to loom large. Just a year earlier, on November 13, 1974, DeFeo inflicted unimaginable horror by slaying his entire family under the influence of what he claimed was a demonic force.

Amid this ominous backdrop, an unsuspecting family – George Lutz and Kathy Lutz, along with her three children from a previous marriage: Billy, Michael, and Chelsea – moves into the fateful residence. Initially, the house seems to hold no dark secrets, but as days go by, their once tranquil existence is shattered by unexplained phenomena that spiral into madness.

Particularly troubling is young Chelsea, who forms a disquieting bond with Jodie, a name belonging to one of DeFeo’s murdered children. As their harrowing tale unfolds, it becomes increasingly clear that they’re not alone in this house. One night, as George and Kathy step out, they leave the kids in the care of Lisa, a babysitter who unwittingly ties them to the tragic history of the DeFeo family.

Upon settling in, Chelsea confides her frightening dreams about Jodie, intensifying the sense of dread. Lisa’s cautious exploration of Chelsea’s room leads to a chilling encounter, where she receives the unsettling warning: > “I’m a bad babysitter.” Lisa’s attempt to confront Jodie for stirring up panic only makes matters worse when Billy dares her to enter the closet where Jodie had met a grisly fate.

In a horrific twist, Lisa becomes trapped and confronted by Jodie’s vengeful spirit, pleading for liberation just as paramedics rush to her side. As she is transported to the hospital, Lisa reveals to Kathy the terrifying events that transpired.

As time passes, George’s demeanor grows increasingly volatile and hostile, coupled with escalating paranormal events within the house. One night, his paranoia peaks; in a tragic moment, he confuses their beloved family dog, Harry, for a wicked apparition lurking in the boathouse. Fueled by some dark possession, he brutally takes Harry’s life, leaving Billy and Chelsea horrified.

This atrocity deepens the rift among the family as George denies any wrongdoing concerning Harry’s disappearance, unravelling their collective reality as they feel the tightening grip of the evil around them. In a desperate plea, Kathy seeks assistance from Father Callaway to cleanse their home, but he flees, terrified by the very presence he had tried to confront.

Unbeknownst to Kathy, their new home carries the haunting legacy of Reverend Jeremiah Ketcham, a 17th-century cult leader whose horrific actions against the Indigenous people of Amityville seep into the walls. Meanwhile, as George delves deeper into the house’s shadows, he discovers the tormented souls of those who suffered at Ketcham’s hands. In a chilling encounter, George is faced with the revenant of Ketcham, who enacts a tragic reenactment of his own demise, staining George with blood as a dark energy begins to consume him.

Recognizing that her husband’s disturbing transformations stem from possible possession, Kathy resolves to remove her children from the cursed home, following Father Callaway’s warning. However, as they attempt to escape, a ferocious confrontation between the possessed George and his family erupts, leading Kathy to desperately fight to subdue him and flee by boat.

Eventually, George escapes the darkness that had ensnared him, prompting the family to abandon their nightmarish abode after just 28 days. In a chilling epilogue, Jodie remains in the now-empty house, her screams of terror reverberating through the silent space as the mahogany walls twist and shift, only to see her cruelly pulled beneath the floorboards by unseen hands.
