Newlyweds Bill Martin, Robin Thomas and Claire Martin, Starr Andreeff, move their new family into a house Bill built himself. Not long after settling in, Bill discovers a dollhouse in the shed that’s modeled after 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York. He brings the eerie keepsake into the home and parks it in the garage, a strange sense of unease settling over him. That night, the house’s fireplace seems to ignite on its own, heating every room, and Bill is troubled by a nightmare in which his daughter Jessica burns in the flames. The next morning, Claire finds the dollhouse again in the garage and suggests giving it to Jessica for her birthday, noting that their car had somehow rolled forward in the garage the night before, nearly striking the birthday present they had bought.

Jessica’s birthday gathering brings in Jessica’s Aunt Marla, Lenore Kasdorf, and Uncle Tobias, Franc Ross. Jessica is delighted by the dollhouse and discovers a chest full of miniature dolls inside it, but Aunt Marla and Uncle Tobias move with an unusual air of nerves around the toys, as if they know something that the others do not.

In the days that follow, a tide of strange occurrences washes over the family: Jimmy Martin, Jarrett Lennon, loses his pet mouse, which somehow finds its way into the dollhouse; at the same time, Jessica is menaced by an enormous white mouse that lurks under her bed. Claire begins to experience unsettling urges toward Todd Martin, Bill’s teenage son, during moments with Bill, casting a pall over their family life. Bill is haunted by nightmares of voodoo dolls, demons, and his family being murdered, a cycle that overlaps with childhood memories he suppresses. He confides in Marla that he had similar dreams as a child, including a premonition of his parents dying in a fire that later came true. Jimmy also begins to witness supernatural visits from his deceased father, who appears to him as a decaying zombie urging him to harm Bill.

One afternoon, Todd brings his girlfriend Dana, Lisa Robin Kelly, to the property. In an exterior shed, they uncover newspaper clippings about the foundation of the new home and realize the house was built around the fireplace from the original structure. The couple’s discovery leads them to a dangerous moment as they begin to have sex, but a large fly attacks Todd’s ear. The next evening, Bill and Claire go out for dinner, leaving Todd to babysit Jimmy and Jessica. Todd invites Dana over and sends the children to bed. While Todd mixes cocktails in the kitchen, Dana’s hair suddenly bursts into flames, leaving her in a coma with serious burns. Todd blames his father for the accident, suspecting a faulty coil in the fireplace’s gas line.

Meanwhile, Marla and Tobias, who practice occult arts, take one of Jessica’s dolls from the dollhouse and perform a ritual that animates the figure, giving it a demonic life identified as Gamigin. Objects begin to fly around their home, injuring Marla, and Tobias stabs the doll with a knife, pinning a large fly. Claire later finds a bruise on Jimmy’s face and suspects Bill; Jimmy tries to tell her that his father intends to kill Bill, but she refuses to believe him. The family is frightened when the zombie of Claire’s deceased husband appears, restrains them, and forces them to sit by the fireplace. Bill tries to enter the house through the garage but is knocked unconscious by carbon monoxide emanating from his car, which seems to start on its own.

Tobias arrives just in time to rescue Bill, and the two make their way back inside with the voodoo doll in hand. They confront the looming threat as they battle the zombie; Tobias urges Jimmy to fetch the doll, and Jimmy throws the voodoo doll into the fireplace, causing the zombie to vanish. Todd is visited by an illusion of Dana in the hospital, and she tries to kill him, but Claire intervenes. The family attempts to flee, but Jessica is nowhere to be found. A notebook filled with Jessica’s observations about the dollhouse reveals one startling line: “My hand disappears in the fireplace.” Bill realizes the fireplace is a portal to another place, and he and Tobias plunge into it to locate Jessica. They find her on the floor, surrounded by the bloodied remnants of the filled voodoo dolls. Tobias casts a protective spell, enabling Bill and Jessica to escape, but he is dragged away by the demons fleeing from the dolls, Gamigin among them.

Bill uses the dollhouse’s energy to destroy it by tossing it into the fireplace, and the family flees in their car as the house explodes behind them, the danger finally receding as they drive into an uncertain daylight.

Amityville: Dollhouse Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Amityville: Dollhouse (1996): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Claire develop sexual urges toward Todd?

Claire's sexual attraction to her stepson Todd is supernatural in origin, induced by the demonic forces in the house. The evil presence manipulates family relationships and blurs boundaries to destabilize the household. This disturbing subplot demonstrates how the demons exploit psychological vulnerability to tear the family apart from within.

Foreshadowing: Earlier scenes establish that the house influences the family mentally, as seen in Bill's recurring nightmares.

  • todd
  • supernatural influence
  • psychological manipulation
  • family corruption
Q2

How does the fireplace work as a portal?

The fireplace serves as a dimensional portal connecting the Martin house to the dollhouse dimension where the demons reside. Bill discovers this when Jessica's notebook reveals her hand disappeared into the fireplace. Both Bill and Tobias physically enter the fireplace and emerge in the dollhouse's hellish space to rescue Jessica.

Foreshadowing: The fireplace igniting on its own during the first night foreshadows its supernatural significance.

  • fireplace
  • portal
  • dollhouse
  • dimension
  • demon realm

Q3

What is Gamigin and how was it released?

Gamigin is a demonic entity that inhabits the dollhouse, given life through a ritual performed by Aunt Marla and Uncle Tobias. The couple, who practice occult arts, steal one of Jessica's dolls and perform a ceremony that animates it with demonic essence. Once released, Gamigin joins other demons in attacking the family.

Foreshadowing: Marla and Tobias display nervous behavior around the dolls at Jessica's birthday, hinting at their knowledge of the objects' true nature.

Q4

Why does Bill have prophetic nightmares?

Bill experiences prophetic nightmares because he possesses psychic sensitivity to supernatural forces, a trait dating back to his childhood. He reveals to Marla that he once dreamed his parents would die in a fire, and the premonition came true. The house's demonic presence amplifies these abilities, allowing him to see visions of danger threatening his family.

Foreshadowing: The first night's nightmare of Jessica burning establishes Bill's prophetic connection to the house's evil.

  • prophetic dreams
  • psychic abilities
  • childhood trauma

Q5

Why is the dollhouse modeled after 112 Ocean Avenue?

The dollhouse is a replica of the original Amityville house because it serves as a conduit for the demonic entities that inhabited 112 Ocean Avenue. When Bill built his new house on the vacant lot where the original structure stood, the lingering evil forces used the dollhouse as a gateway. The house was literally built around the original fireplace, physically connecting the two locations.

Foreshadowing: The discovery of newspaper clippings revealing the house was built around the original fireplace confirms the direct connection to Amityville.

Q6

Why does the zombie of Claire's deceased husband appear?

The zombie of Claire's late husband materializes as part of the house's campaign to terrorize and control the family. The apparition restrains Claire and Jimmy, forcing them to sit by the fireplace. The zombie also manipulates Jimmy, urging him to kill Bill, demonstrating how the demons exploit past trauma and grief to turn family members against each other.

Foreshadowing: Jimmy's description of visits from a scary man establishes supernatural interference with the children before the zombie fully appears.

  • claire's husband

Q7

What happens to Tobias at the end?

Tobias is dragged away by demons while attempting to protect Bill and Jessica inside the fireplace portal. After casting a protective spell that allows Bill and Jessica to escape, Tobias remains behind as the demons, including Gamigin, pull him into the dollhouse dimension. His fate is left ambiguous but implied to be fatal or worse.

Foreshadowing: Tobias's knowledge of the occult and willingness to perform rituals suggests he understands the risks involved.

Q8

Why does the car start on its own and nearly hit the dollhouse?

The car's supernatural activity is part of the house's escalating attacks on the family. The car begins running on its own, filling the garage with carbon monoxide that knocks Bill unconscious when he tries to enter. This demonstrates how the demonic forces can manipulate mechanical objects, similar to how the fireplace ignites spontaneously.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, the car rolls forward in the garage overnight, destroying the children's birthday gift, establishing the vehicle as another tool of supernatural aggression.

  • car
  • carbon monoxide
  • supernatural attack
  • garage

Q9

Why does Jimmy's pet mouse end up inside the dollhouse?

Jimmy's pet mouse mysteriously appears inside the dollhouse because the miniature world reflects and connects to the real house. The dollhouse acts as a supernatural mirror, pulling objects and beings from the full-sized home into its realm. This event demonstrates the dollhouse's power to transgress dimensional boundaries.

Foreshadowing: The mouse's transformation mirrors Jessica's encounter with the enormous white mouse under her bed, both creatures connecting the two worlds.

Q10

What does Jessica's note 'My hand disappears in the fireplace' mean?

Jessica's notebook entry reveals she discovered the fireplace's portal nature before anyone else. Her hand literally passes into the dollhouse dimension when she touches the fireplace, confirming the supernatural connection. This discovery leads Bill to realize the fireplace is the gateway the demons use to enter their home.

Foreshadowing: The earlier mouse incident foreshadows objects and beings crossing between the house and dollhouse.
