Subconscious Cruelty

A man dissects a woman in an opening sequence, removing an eyeball from her belly. The scene establishes a brutal, clinical tone and introduces the film's fascination with body horror.

A young man named Brother narrates his growing fixation on his sister, who is pregnant by her husband. He asserts that semen is a gift of creation and that female menstruation is a cruel joke. He declares his intention to kill during the creation process.

During the sister's delivery, the brother helps bring the child into the world. He slits the baby’s throat, and blood splashes onto the sister’s face. He then sets up an altar of the infant in the sink and wraps the corpse before leaving it to rot.

The narrator reveals that he once attempted necrophilia with the sister, but she was cold and lifeless, so he stopped out of his own displeasure. The confession underscores the depth of his derangement. The act is described as a drastic, final attempt at creation through death.

The sister’s body stays in place after the murder, and the brother admits that he sometimes sleeps beside her. The scene emphasizes the lingering presence of the crime within their shared space. It foreshadows the continued fixation that defines this segment.

On a grass-covered plain, nude people writhe and caress the earth, digging into the soil which bleeds profusely as they perform sexual acts with nature. The group’s ritual blends creation, destruction, and sexuality in a surreal tableau. The act is presented as a symbolic rebirth outside human society.

A faith-obsessed businessman is tormented by a nightmare in which his doppelganger inserts four fishhooks into his penis as they are pulled. A woman’s hand masturbates him and blood erupts as his genitals are progressively harmed. The dream escalates toward a self-inflicted mutilation.

The doppelganger melts a crucifix and pours its content into a syringe, injecting it into the businessman’s forehead and presumably killing him. The scene blends religious imagery with bodily harm to underscore the film’s themes of faith and violence. It ends this nightmare with a fatal, symbolic act.

Elsewhere in the town, a man who resembles Jesus stands naked and bleeding in front of a church. He is dragged inside by three nude demonic women who proceed to torment and devour him. The scene shifts to a ritualized, sacrilegious form of violence.

The demonic trio force the man to eat his own flesh while tearing out his heart, cannibalizing him. They urinate on the corpse and pour wine over him, signaling a corrupt parody of sacramental rite as they perform acts with his entrails. The violence escalates toward the film’s final grotesque acts.

The ritual culminates with the man being impaled through the anus by a stick, a brutal and explicit close to the sequence. The screen then cuts to black, leaving the outcome ambiguous and maximizing the sense of shock. The lynchpin of the segment closes the film’s most extreme imagery.
