In the wake of his discharge from the Marines, former Force Reconnaissance Scout Sniper Thomas Beckett—who lost his index finger in the earlier mission—is visited by CIA officer James Eckles and Colonel Dan McKenna. Despite the injury, Beckett remains a formidable gunman with a storied career, and the powers that be decide he is needed for one risky operation: to take out a renegade Serbian general, Mile Valstoria, whose brutal hit-and-run ethnic-cleansing campaigns in Muslim-majority areas threaten to ignite a larger regional war. Beckett agrees, but makes one demand: a capable spotter must accompany him. Enter Jake Cole, an experienced U.S. Army sniper who is on death row for killing a federal officer who allegedly betrayed him. Cole is released and promised a pardon if he signs onto the mission.
The two men are dropped into Serbia and push their way toward a Catholic basilica where local resistance members provide support. There, Sophia helps them reach her high-rise apartment, which offers a vantage point over the area where Valstoria is expected to appear near a government building. The following morning, Beckett carries out the assassination, a strike that triggers a citywide lockdown and shatters any hope of a clean extraction. With their original escape point compromised, Beckett and Cole improvise, risking capture as they hitch a ride on a public tram. Soldiers close in, but the two operatives seize control of the tram and smash it into police vehicles, tearing through the streets in a desperate bid for safety. Cole is eventually captured and imprisoned by Valstoria’s men, while Beckett manages to slip away.
That night, Beckett reunites with Sophia, and they devise a plan to rescue Cole. Sophia enlists help from her brothers, Zoran and Vojislav, and the group launches a bold move to ambush a military convoy carrying Cole and another prisoner, Pavel, out of the prison. They succeed in freeing Cole and Pavel, and they scatter into a waiting van provided by Zoran. During a tense moment, Cole confesses to Beckett that the assassination of Valstoria was theatrically staged to trap Cole and allow Pavel’s rescue from jail, revealing a darker layer to the operation and sowing doubt about the mission’s true objectives.
That night, the trio holes up in an abandoned factory that was supposed to serve as the extraction point. The enemy closes in with a tank and infantry, and in the ensuing firefight, both Zoran and Vojislav are killed. Beckett, Pavel, and Cole manage to escape through a sewer and split from the others, while Sophia is urged to cut ties and leave the group to ensure her safety.
The fugitives head toward Komra, a Muslim town where Pavel’s friend Nauzad offers help to reach the border. The plan is simple in theory but perilous in practice: reach the road and catch a bus that will ferry them across the border. However, a nearby checkpoint forces them to abandon that course and press on toward Simand, the secondary extraction point, on foot. Unbeknownst to them, Captain Marks and his special-forces unit have tracked their path and close in on Simand.
In Simand, a brutal ambush erupts in the forest outside town as the three men try to slip through. Pavel suffers a minor wound, and the trio fights through the traps and weapons arrayed against them. They kill the pursuing force and press into town, where the tracker takes up a sniping position in a factory. Beckett directs Cole to escort Pavel to the extraction zone while he engages the shooter. Cole takes a heavy hit, but Beckett eliminates the sniper and carries the wounded Cole to a waiting helicopter, along with Pavel.
As they lift off, the grim reality settles in: Cole is gravely wounded. In a final, elegiac moment, the helicopter carries Beckett, Pavel, and the injured Cole away from the danger below, and Cole’s last words ring out with a stark sense of liberty and sacrifice:
