Major Cleve “Iceman” Saville, a veteran World War II ace, returns to combat during the Korean War with a renewed hunger to pilot the F-86 Sabre jet fighter. His commanding officer, Colonel Dutch Imil, assigns him command of a flight, placing him in charge of a group that includes a new replacement, talented but brash Lieutenant Ed Pell. On Pell’s first mission, he breaks formation and chases after a group of MiG-15s, leaving his element leader exposed and causing the other pilot to be killed. The fallout leaves Saville wary of Pell, yet Imil overrules his concern, viewing Pell as a younger mirror of Saville and believing that someone who can push Pell to grow up is exactly what the young pilot needs.

Another pilot under Saville’s wing is Lieutenant Carl Abbott, who struggles with confidence. His worried wife Kristina Abbott pleads with Saville to watch over him, setting up a dangerous triangle of loyalty, duty, and desire. Saville finds himself drawn to Kristina, and the attraction is mutual, complicating his already complicated command. Abbott, sensing an opportunity to test Saville, makes a bold proposition: in exchange for a chance to face Casey Jones—“the most feared enemy ace”—his wife would be allowed to accompany them. Saville, unsettled by the moral cost, refuses to barter with lives.

The tides of fate soon compel action. On a later mission, Abbott directly tangles with Casey Jones and is shot down behind enemy lines. Saville answers the call, shooting down the ace and then turning his attention to locating Abbott. He finally spots Abbott’s parachute and, defying standing orders, crash-lands his own aircraft nearby to make a rescue. They manage to free the injured Abbott from a tree, but their fragile relief is short-lived as enemy patrols close in. Pell tries to defend them by strafing, but he is shot down and the three airmen must press on together through hostile territory toward the relative safety of UN lines.

Their exfiltration is aided by an unlikely ally, a Korean Christian farmer and his family. The Americans hide when an enemy patrol passes, but in their haste they leave behind a flight jacket that is spotted, unraveling the farmer’s household in a brutal retaliation where the entire family is executed. Saville and Pell choose vengeance, slaying the surrounding patrol in a tense ambush, though Saville sustains a shoulder wound in the process. Weak and hungry, the trio eventually makes it back to the front, where they are finally within reach of the UN lines.

In the aftermath, Saville and Abbott recover in a military hospital. Abbott, now slated for transfer back to the United States, has been forever altered by his brush with death and the danger they faced together. He confesses the new perspective he has gained, and asks Kristina for another chance at their marriage. Kristina, faced with a choice that weighs personal happiness against duty, decides to accompany him, choosing a life beyond the cockpit and the war they endured.
