Sightseers (2013) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Sightseers (2013), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Chris, an avid caravan enthusiast and aspiring writer, embarks on a road trip with his girlfriend Tina, much to the disapproval of her mother, who still blames Tina for the tragic death of their dog, “Poppy.” Their adventure begins at the National Tramway Museum, where Chris confronts a man littering. Tensions escalate when Chris intentionally runs the man over, claiming it was an accident while secretly smirking at the result, unbeknownst to Tina. Chris views Tina as his muse, further complicating their relationship.

While at a caravan park, they encounter Janice and Ian, along with their dog, Banjo, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Poppy. When Janice reveals that Ian is a published writer, jealousy consumes Chris. During a solitary walk, Chris attacks Ian, bludgeoning him with a rock, stealing his camera, and pushing him off a cliff. Tina discovers Ian’s photos on the camera and confronts Chris, who admits to the murder, surprisingly receiving her acceptance.

While walking through a National Trust park, a conflict arises when Banjo defecates, drawing the ire of a tourist who insists Tina clean it up. Chris then incites Tina to falsely claim the man tried to assault her, which culminates in Chris brutally killing him.

At another caravan park, Chris encounters Martin, an engineer testing a bicycle-attached mini-caravan. Tensions increase when, during dinner, Tina catches Chris kissing a bride as part of a bachelorette dare. In a fit of rage, she pushes the bride down a steep hill to her death, all witnessed by Chris. The next morning, instead of taking in local attractions, Chris feigns helping Martin with his caravan, leading to a dispute that drives Tina away. Attempting to confess the murders to her mother becomes futile when her mother abruptly hangs up.

The chaotic dynamics continue as Chris wakes to find Tina speeding down the highway. In a fit of anger and confusion, she runs over a jogger, causing an outburst from Chris, who believes his murdering choices are more justified than hers. They dispose of the jogger’s body by the roadside before journeying to a mountain to camp, with the picturesque Ribblehead Viaduct in view. A sudden hailstorm leads them back into the caravan, where Tina discovers a drawing in Chris’s notebook depicting them about to jump from the viaduct.

Martin arrives with Banjo in his mini-caravan, leading to further enmeshment in their murky moral boundaries. As tensions erupt over a fight about Banjo’s name, Tina, in a fit of rage, pushes Martin’s caravan off a cliff while he’s inside. Afterward, in a twisted turn of events, Chris and Tina have a brief moment of connection before Chris sets their caravan ablaze. They race towards the Ribblehead Viaduct, culminating in a moment of profound sincerity and reflection.

In a tragic climax, Chris asks Tina if she enjoyed their holiday, to which she enthusiastically replies that it was “brilliant.” However, when he questions her about her suicidal intentions, she unexpectedly lets go of his hand as he steps off the viaduct, watching him fall to his death. In an eerie silence, Tina gazes at her hand before the screen fades to black, leaving a chilling end to their dark escapade.
