Nancy, Ashley Rae Spillers, is the sharp, quick-witted center of a financially strapped paranormal-debunking team that also includes her best friend Gwen, Josephine Decker; Gwen’s boyfriend Chad, Adam Tate; Nancy’s ex Floyd, Jonny Mars; and their loyal dog Hamlet. After a particularly disastrous investigation that derails a police inquiry, the group agrees to take a new assignment debunking rumors at the Kyser mansion, hired by a bank employee hoping to sell the property.
On the drive to the mansion, Officer Lance, Paul Gordon, lays out the house’s history: the Kysers once ran a church and a school on the grounds, and whispers of Satanic rituals and human sacrifices lingered in town, which locals say kept developers away from the land.
They are allowed onto the property after Lance dismisses a twig-made pentagram as a prank, though he offers Nancy his contact details and even a light flirt. Chad experiences what he believes is a psychic vision of the Kysers’ dark practices, but the evidence remains slim as their search yields little.
That night Floyd uses the group’s monitoring gear to spy on Chad and Gwen having sex, and he also spots an unseen watcher. He hurries to warn them, which inflames the couple, especially when they discover the van has been set on fire and left stranded on the property. The tension spikes as Floyd reveals he spiked the group’s drinking water with LSD to hide his own stash from Officer Lance.
As fear deepens, they uncover the bank employee’s body, confirming that something sinister is in the house. Their dread intensifies when Hamlet, the group’s dog, is found killed and partially eaten by a feral child. One by one, the group is picked off until only Gwen and Nancy remain, trapped by a leather-masked intruder.
Lance arrives to rescue them, but the adult killer knocks him unconscious and drags him away. Nancy and Gwen regroup to pull Lance to safety and return to the house, where they stumble into the killers’ lair, a chamber filled with toys. Gwen theorizes that Mona Kyser, Heather Kafka and Frankie Kyser, Sean Ryan, the two surviving children, are the real killers, not Satanists as the town had claimed.
With this knowledge, Nancy tries to lure the Kyser siblings away with feigned sympathy to free Lance, but Gwen is grievously injured in the bid. Nancy kills Frankie Kyser, then attempts to save Gwen, who begs her to end her life. In a tearful moment, Nancy fulfills Gwen’s wish, but the danger isn’t over: Mona Kyser ambushes her, and after a brutal struggle Nancy kills Mona and gets Lance to his patrol car, only to be attacked again by the feral child as they attempt an escape.
