Jack Grimaldi is a dedicated NYPD homicide detective who seemingly has it all—an extravagant lifestyle, a strikingly beautiful wife named Natalie, and a young mistress named Sheri. However, beneath this facade lies a complex web of deceit and moral ambiguity, as Jack maintains his affluence through deep-rooted corruption. He performs favors for the notorious Mafia boss Don Falcone, receiving hefty cash bribes in return.

Jack’s latest assignment plunges him deeper into the criminal underworld: he is tasked with uncovering the whereabouts of Nick Gazarra, a mobster turned federal witness under the protection of law enforcement. The plot thickens when Gazarra, along with his detail, falls victim to the ruthless hitwoman Mona Demarkov. Jack is left grappling with guilt and discomfort regarding his indirect role in the death of fellow officers, which adds layers to his character.

As the story unfolds, Mona is captured, but Falcone sees her as a threat, fearing her potential to testify against him and usurp his criminal empire. Reluctantly, Jack is assigned to monitor Mona as she is moved to a secure location for her transfer to federal custody. The tension escalates when Mona uses her charm to seduce Jack, attempting to eliminate him during their unexpected encounter, though their moment of passion is interrupted by the timely arrival of the agents.

Falcone’s disappointment escalates when Jack’s blunders result in severe repercussions, leading to a brutal punishment—a toe amputation. At this juncture, Jack realizes the peril he has brought upon both his wife and mistress. In a desperate attempt to protect them, he sends Natalie out of the city with all his savings, instructing her on how to reunite with him in a different life. His relationship with Sheri also comes to an end as he places her on a train, urging her to leave before more chaos ensues.

Jack’s pursuit to eliminate Mona takes a twist, as he finds himself inexplicably drawn to her. In a striking turn of events, she proposes that he assists her in faking her own death, prompting Jack to procure false documents. However, when she refuses to pay for his help, she turns the tables on him, leading to a violent altercation where he inadvertently injures her.

In a gripping confrontation, Jack’s attempt to abduct Mona leads to a catastrophic accident, forcing her to escape in the most audacious manner. Their complicated relationship continues as Mona entices Jack into a trap, bringing him to a vacant apartment where she plays mind games that culminate in a tragic outcome; Jack mistakenly shoots Sheri instead of Mona. Mona cunningly manipulates the scene, making it appear as if she had perished, cementing Jack’s daze of horror.

Mona’s treachery reaches new heights as she blackmails Jack, coercing him into burying Falcone alive, further entwining his fate with hers. Ultimately, she betrays him by turning him into the authorities, striking a deal that ensures he will face consequences for the slew of murders he was tricked into committing. In a dramatic climax in the courthouse, Mona, in a moment filled with contempt, declares, “sex with you was lame” and ominously intimates that both his wife and Jack himself are doomed.

Enraged and desperate, Jack retaliates—seizing a gun from an officer’s holster, he shoots Mona dead. However, instead of facing the justice he expected, Jack is unexpectedly commended for his actions and allowed to escape the shadows of his past, reborn under the name “Jim Daugherty.”

The film concludes on a melancholy note, depicting Jack’s solitary existence in a desolate desert town as he adjusts to his new identity. Every May 1 and December 1, he awaits his wife Natalie, clinging to the hope of reunification as he reminisces over old wedding photographs. The images serve as stark reminders of his former life, contrasting the vibrant memories of his marriage with haunting black-and-white photos of his past indiscretions, including the unforgettable Mona.
