In the fourth installment of the Resident Evil series, set just weeks after Resident Evil: Extinction, the battle against the Umbrella Corporation intensifies. Alice (Milla Jovovich) leads a group of clones in a dangerous mission to eliminate Albert Wesker (Shawn Roberts) at his base in Japan. However, their plan quickly goes awry when Wesker detonates an explosion, annihilating the clones and making a narrow escape via aircraft. In a desperate confrontation, Alice is injected with a serum that strips her of her superhuman abilities, rendering her human once more. Wesker boasts that his own powers, derived from the T-Virus, have now surpassed hers. As she’s on the brink of defeat, the aircraft crashes, leaving Alice to survive the wreckage.
Fast forward six months, and Alice is tirelessly pursuing a mysterious radio signal from “Arcadia,” a rumored sanctuary in Alaska. After countless disappointments and the haunting loss of her friends, including Claire Redfield (Ali Larter) and K-Mart, she finds herself questioning her existence as the last human on Earth. A glimmer of hope arises as she stumbles upon an abandoned beach and discovers the helicopter used by Claire and her crew. Yet, her reunion takes a dark turn when a memory-wiped Claire, controlled by an Umbrella device, attacks her. After freeing Claire from the device, memories begin to resurface.
Together, they embark on an adventurous journey into the dilapidated ruins of Los Angeles where they encounter a small group of survivors led by Luther West (Boris Kodjoe), who are holed up in a maximum-security prison besieged by the undead. Alice crash-lands their plane on the prison roof, only to learn that “Arcadia” is not a location, but a moving cargo tanker. To reach it, they must navigate a path together. Among the prisoners is Chris Redfield (Wentworth Miller), Claire’s brother, who claims to possess knowledge of a safe escape route but remains locked up until the group faces an undead assault threatening their very lives.
With time running out due to the relentless onslaught from the undead, the survivors decide to release Chris. He proposes using a military vehicle trapped within the prison, but upon discovering it’s non-operational, tensions rise, leading to betrayal among the group. When they finally resort to escape through sewer tunnels, Alice, Claire, and Chris narrowly evade capture, but their journey takes a perilous twist as they reach Arcadia, only to find it a sinister Umbrella trap designed to capture any remaining survivors for experimentation.
As they delve deeper into the ship, memories flood back to Claire, revealing how Umbrella ambushed her group in Alaska. They manage to free several captives, including K-Mart, and venture further into the bowels of the Arcadia. Here, Alice confronts Wesker, who explains the convoluted nature of his survival, caught in a battle for control against the T-Virus. In a thrilling showdown, Alice, Chris, and Claire wage war against the mutated Wesker, seemingly defeating him with K-Mart’s unexpected aid. However, Wesker survives, regenerating from his wounds and escaping while triggering a purge bomb aimed at annihilating everyone on board.
Anticipating his treacherous move, Alice had cleverly planted a bomb on Wesker’s helicopter, ensuring its destruction as she, Claire, and Chris watch from the Arcadia. Despite the victory, a figure parachutes away from the chaos, hinting at Wesker’s continued existence. Meanwhile, Luther emerges from the sewers, having narrowly evaded death.
With newfound resolve, Alice turns the Arcadia into a genuine safe haven, broadcasting a call for any remaining survivors. Yet, just as they contemplate their next steps, a menacing Umbrella fleet is spotted on the horizon, led by a mind-controlled Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory), setting the stage for yet another thrilling encounter.
