Johnny (Bill Moseley) and Barbara (Patricia Tallman) find themselves at their mother’s grave in a remote cemetery. During this somber visit, Barbara spots a man crying and mumbling “I’m sorry.” Suddenly, disaster strikes as she is attacked by a zombie. Johnny rushes to her aid, but tragically loses his life in the process. Barbara manages to escape to Johnny’s Mercedes, only to be confronted by another zombie and a recently reanimated corpse. In desperation, she flees and discovers a seemingly deserted farmhouse.
Inside, she encounters Ben (Tony Todd), who wielding a crowbar, explains that they are surrounded by these terrifying creatures. Together, they begin to secure the house—barricading doors and windows against the onslaught of the undead. Their efforts, however, uncover additional survivors: the married couple Harry and Helen Cooper (Tom Towles and McKee Anderson), their daughter Sarah (Heather Mazur), and young couple Tom Landry (William Butler) and Judy Rose Larson (Katie Finneran), who have been hiding in the cellar.
As they strive to defend their makeshift refuge, tensions rise among the group regarding the best way to survive. Harry argues for retreating to the cellar, where it seems safer. In contrast, Ben insists that staying in the barricaded house is their best chance, claiming that the cellar is a “death trap.” Meanwhile, Barbara suggests they could escape on foot, noting the zombies’ slow movement and that they could simply “walk right past them.”
With an impending sense of doom as sounds of hammers attract more zombies, they devise a plan to escape in Ben’s truck, which unfortunately is out of fuel. Ben recalls a locked gas pump on the property, and as the group searches a corpse nearby, they acquire the keys. Increasingly desperate, Judy, Tom, and Ben head up the hill towards the gas pump, but the situation quickly spirals out of control. Ben falls off the back of the truck and is left alone to fend off the undead. When Tom tries to shoot the lock off the gas pump, chaos ensues, leading to a catastrophic explosion that kills both Tom and Judy.
Amid the chaos, Ben returns to find the household descending into madness. Harry has taken Barbara’s gun, further escalating tensions. Unknown to the group upstairs, Sarah, infected with the zombie bite, has succumbed and returned as an undead being, attacking her mother. This triggers a violent confrontation between Harry, who is desperately trying to protect his daughter, and Ben and Barbara, who are just trying to stay alive. Both Ben and Harry suffer serious injuries in the process. In a desperate move, Harry retreats to the attic while Ben makes his way to the cellar, only to be further troubled by the reanimation of Helen Cooper, forcing him to shoot her.
As the horror unfolds, Barbara leaves the now-overrun house in search of help. Meanwhile, Ben, amid his unraveling sanity, discovers the gas pump keys in the cellar—where they had been all along. Eventually, Barbara encounters a group of local zombie hunters who are adamant about clearing the area. The next day, she returns to the farmhouse with the hunters, only to find an even bleaker situation. Ben has succumbed to his wounds and turned into a zombie. While he seems to recognize Barbara, he is quickly shot as he emerges from the cellar. In a tragic twist, Barbara then confronts Harry, who has survived in the attic, but she kills him in vengeance for his past actions.
As the film draws to a close, Barbara watches as the hunting group prepares to burn the remains of the undead, reflecting on the horrific events she has endured. The final haunting image is of her saying they have “another one for the fire.”
