What Happens in Resident Evil: Extinction: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Resident Evil: Extinction (2007) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

The film begins with Alice (Milla Jovovich), the protagonist from the previous installments, awakening in a shower, dazed and terrified. Upon realizing she is back at the Spencer Estate in Raccoon City, where it all began, she struggles to comprehend her situation. After putting on a striking red dress found on the bed, she cautiously steps into the hallway, feeling an intense sensation of being preyed upon. Making her way to the infamous laser room from the original film, she narrowly escapes certain death by leaping into a vent before a terrifying trap activates. She drops into a hospital corridor, where the eerie silence is shattered when a massive guillotine cuts a nearby rolling bed in two. After a grim smile, she manages to evade this blade, only to be gunned down by a second trap that unexpectedly erupts from the floor. As her lifeless body lies there, three scientists from Umbrella Corporation, including Dr. Issacs (Iain Glen), approach and discuss disposing of her. They throw her remains into an outdoor pit littered with other dead clones of Alice. This facility is revealed to be just a small segment of an expansive Umbrella underground base located in the North American West.

From here, the real Alice provides us with a harrowing update, detailing the aftermath of the previous movie, Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004). She explains that the epidemic caused by the T-Virus quickly escalated beyond the isolation of Raccoon City, infecting the entire North American continent within weeks and spreading globally shortly thereafter. This catastrophic event devastated ecosystems, annihilating nearly all plant life and transforming the world into a desolate wasteland. Humanity was forced into a nomadic lifestyle, constantly searching for refuge and safety.

As we journey with Alice, she rides her motorcycle into the derelict ruins of Salt Lake City, Utah, while listening to a radio broadcast claiming the existence of survivors. Upon stopping outside the station, she unsheathes her twin machetes and cautiously enters. To her dismay, the station is devoid of zombies, signaling the broadcast is likely a trap. Inside, she discovers an elderly woman who mourns her "baby," only to find a lifeless infant. As she drops the corpse in shock, Alice is ambushed by the station's five residents, who deceptively lure victims to rob them. Captured and thrown into a cage-lined pit filled with zombie dogs, Alice showcases her agility, defeating two of the beasts before restraining the others. However, their chaotic antics lead to a collapse that sends the station's inhabitants into the pit, where they fall victim to their own unleashed creatures, granting Alice a quick escape while reclaiming her weapons.

Meanwhile, in Nevada, a substantial convoy equipped with classic rock music traverses the arid landscape. Among the convoy members are former Umbrella soldiers Carlos (Oded Fehr) and LJ (Mike Epps), who share friendly banter over the CB radio regarding cigarettes, revealing a bond built through shared experiences.

In stark contrast, Dr. Issacs faces the ire of his superior, Chairman Albert Wesker (Jason O'Mara), at Umbrella's North American HQ, where discussions reveal the urgent need for a cure for the T-Virus. Issacs insists that he requires the original Project Alice to develop a solution, stating that the existing clones have proven inadequate. The grim demand from Wesker makes clear the stakes as he coldly declares a one-week deadline.

As fate unfurls, Alice strives to refuel at a deserted gas station only to find no power; she ventures inside and discovers a journal with vital transmission logs hinting at a “safe” location in Alaska. Just as she exits with this vital information, a crow with an eerie eye captures her attention, and she picks up a radio broadcast from Mikey (Christopher Egan) detailing the convoy's location.

The convoy arrives at a seemingly abandoned motel, verified by Carlos and LJ as safe. However, a close encounter leaves LJ with a bite from a zombie after he investigates a room. He manages to fend off the creature but is marked with a grim souvenir. Tension rises that evening as Claire (Ali Larter) and Carlos converse about their tiresome journey, revealing Claire's growing exhaustion from their relentless movement. Meanwhile, Alice experiences troubling dreams during an uneasy slumber in the desert, awakening to unleash psionic energy, further complicating her situation.

As night descends, Alice dreams of danger while crows gather around K-Mart (Spencer Locke) and Claire, immediately instigating a panic to evacuate. However, as they flee, chaos breaks out when the crows attack, overwhelming the group. Amidst the pandemonium, Carlos and LJ manage to save the children while Alice exerts her newfound abilities to shield her allies, defeating the crows in a spectacular display of power.

In Issacs’ lab, tension mounts with his distress over Alice’s psychic surge. He attempts to juggle Wesker's commands while scrambling to contain the situation, culminating in a series of distressing developments. As Alice makes her way through the remnants of civilization, the convoy solidifies its resolve to seek Las Vegas, hoping to find resources but unknowingly heading into a deadly trap filled with smart zombies.

As death and chaos ensue, sacrifices are made, and heartbreak unfolds, propelling Alice and the remaining survivors toward a showdown with the lurking threat of Umbrella. With each character facing their trials, the fragile bonds of camaraderie grow even tighter as Alice realizes she must confront the darkness that her enemies have spread across the world, all while plotting her ultimate revenge against the corporation that seeks her obliteration. Finally, as she delves deeper into Umbrella's depths, a newfound alliance is formed, sending shockwaves through the opposition and igniting the flames of rebellion among the discarded Alices who awaken, hungry for vengeance.

Resident Evil: Extinction Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Resident Evil: Extinction (2007): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Alice wake up at the Spencer Estate and get killed by traps?

Alice wakes up at the Spencer Estate because she is a clone created by Umbrella Corporation. The original Alice was captured after the events of Resident Evil: Apocalypse, and Umbrella has been producing clones of her for experimentation. The traps kill her because the facility uses lethal security systems to test or dispose of failed clones. Her body is then thrown into a pit with other dead Alice clones, revealing the scale of Umbrella's cloning program.

Q2

How did the T-Virus spread from Raccoon City to infect the entire world?

According to Alice's narration, the T-Virus escaped the quarantine of Raccoon City within weeks after the events of Resident Evil: Apocalypse. The infection spread so rapidly because it was highly contagious and could spread through multiple vectors, bites, contaminated water, and airborne transmission. Within a very short timeframe, the virus infected the entire North American continent and then spread globally, devastating ecosystems and killing most plant life.

  • t-virus
  • raccoon city
  • pandemic
  • infection spread
  • global devastation
Q3

Why does Alice develop psychic powers in this movie?

Alice develops psionic abilities as a side effect of the T-Virus infection and Umbrella's genetic experimentation on her clones. The T-Virus has mutogenic properties that can activate latent human abilities. Throughout the film, her powers manifest progressively, first in her troubled dreams, then as a visible energy she unleashes while sleeping, and finally as a weaponized force she uses to defeat the attacking crows. This connects to her role as the 'original' Project Alice, whose DNA Umbrella considers essential for creating a cure.

Q4

Why does Umbrella need the original Alice to create a cure?

Dr. Issacs explains to Wesker that the clones produced so far have been inadequate for developing a cure to the T-Virus. The original Alice, the first successful clone with the unique genetic modifications Umbrella engineered, possesses different biological properties than the subsequent copies. Her DNA is essential because it contains the specific traits that could lead to an effective antidote. Wesker gives Issacs a one-week deadline to retrieve her.

Q5

Why was the convoy's journey to Las Vegas actually a trap?

The convoy believes they are traveling to Las Vegas to find resources and possibly other survivors. However, Umbrella has set up Las Vegas as a trap, filling it with smart zombies, zombies that have evolved beyond the mindless undead and can strategize and coordinate attacks. The convoy is walking into an ambush orchestrated by Umbrella, likely to capture Alice or eliminate the survivors.

  • las vegas
  • convoy
  • smart zombies

Q6

Why did the crows suddenly attack the group at K-Mart?

The crows were likely infected with or controlled by the T-Virus, similar to how other animals have been affected in the post-apocalyptic world. Their attack occurs at night while the group is sleeping, catching them off-guard. Alice uses her newly developed psionic powers to shield her allies and defeat the attacking birds, demonstrating her growing abilities.

Q7

What important information does Alice find at the deserted gas station?

At the gas station, Alice discovers a journal containing transmission logs that hint at the existence of a 'safe' location in Alaska. This information becomes crucial as it suggests there may be an uninfected haven where survivors could potentially rebuild. The journal provides Alice with a potential destination beyond the devastated wasteland.

Q8

What happens at the end of the movie when all the Alice clones awaken?

At the end of Resident Evil: Extinction, Alice descends into Umbrella's underground facility to confront the corporation. During this mission, she discovers the pit where all the dead clone bodies were discarded. The ending reveals that other Alice clones throughout the facility begin awakening simultaneously, rising up in unison to join the rebellion against Umbrella. This sets up the events for the next film, Resident Evil: Afterlife, where multiple Alices fight together.

Q9

Why was the radio broadcast about survivors in Salt Lake City actually a trap?

The radio broadcast claiming survivors existed in Salt Lake City was a decoy set up by the five inhabitants of the radio station. They used the broadcast to lure travelers like Alice into their trap, then robbed and killed them. When Alice arrives, she finds no actual survivors, only an elderly woman mourning a dead infant, which was part of the ruse to manipulate her into lowering her guard.

Q10

What happens to LJ after he gets bitten by the zombie at the motel?

After LJ is bitten by a zombie while investigating a room at the motel, he tries to hide the wound from the group out of fear. The bite marks him as infected, and in a post-apocalyptic world where any bite typically leads to transformation into an undead creature, this creates tension and uncertainty about his fate. The scene establishes that despite surviving the immediate attack, LJ is now living on borrowed time.

Q11

Why does Umbrella Corporation create so many clones of Alice?

Umbrella creates multiple Alice clones as part of Project Alice, their attempt to harness her unique genetic makeup. The corporation needs her DNA because she carries specific mutations that make her resistant to, or able to control, the T-Virus. The clones serve as experimental subjects and potential assets in Umbrella's efforts to develop a cure for the virus they accidentally released. The original Alice possesses qualities that subsequent clones have failed to replicate fully.

  • project alice
  • clones
  • experimentation

Q12

What motivates Alice to continue fighting against Umbrella?

Throughout the film, she seeks retribution against Umbrella for the suffering they've inflicted. Her journey involves both survival and planning her ultimate revenge against the corporation that destroyed the world and experimented on her.
