What Is Professor About? (No Spoilers)

The plot of Professor (1962) without spoilers: what it is about, who it follows and where it takes place, told without the twists or the ending. Enough to decide whether it is your next watch, not enough to ruin it.

In the scenic hill station of Darjeeling, Sita Devi Verma presides over her household with unyielding authority. As guardian to two young women and two schoolchildren, she has established a regime where contact with men is strictly forbidden, creating an atmosphere of repression disguised as protection. Her search for a new tutor comes with an unusual requirement: the candidate must be over fifty years old, a stipulation that reflects her deep mistrust of younger men and her determination to maintain absolute control over her domain.

Enter Pritam Khanna, a recent college graduate whose circumstances have thrust him into financial desperation. When his application for the tutoring position is rejected solely on account of his youth, he faces an impossible situation—his mother requires urgent medical care, and employment opportunities seem impossibly scarce. Driven by necessity and ingenuity, he makes a bold decision to disguise himself as an elderly professor, transforming himself into exactly the kind of candidate Sita Devi would consider suitable for the role.

What begins as a deception born of survival quickly evolves into something far more intricate. Within the household, Pritam must maintain his disguise while navigating the suspicions and schemes of those around him, and his presence sets in motion a collision between Sita Devi's rigid principles and his own irreverent approach to life. As he grows fond of Nina, one of the young women under Sita Devi's care, the boundaries of his charade become increasingly precarious, and matters grow more complicated when Sita Devi herself begins to develop unexpected feelings for the distinguished professor who isn't quite what he appears to be.

The film weaves together themes of duty, deception, and desire in a comedic tapestry where every character harbors secrets and agendas. Amidst the witty exchanges and escalating misunderstandings, Pritam must balance his growing affection, his fabricated identity, and his genuine responsibilities—a juggling act that promises both humor and heartfelt moments in equal measure.
