Jaiprakash Paswan [Kamal Haasan] and Janki Paswan [Tabu] are drawn into a tense divorce dispute that tests loyalties, tradition, and the fragile balance of family life. Jai, a Hindu Dusadh who works behind the camera as an assistant dance director, and Janki, the devoted daughter of Durgaprasad Bhardwaj, a stern Hindu Brahmin businessman, fall in love and marry despite his father-in-law’s disapproval. The sting of social expectations soon reshapes their home, and Janki buckles under the pressure of middle-class life. Their marriage falters, arguments flare, and Janki ultimately leaves. The court grants the divorce, and Jai is allowed to visit his beloved daughter Bharti once a week.

When Jai tries to resurrect a bond with Bharti by stepping into the Bhardwaj household, he loses his visitation rights, learning that the stakes are higher than a simple separation. In an attempt to regain influence over Bharti’s life, Durgaprasad places ads in local papers seeking a nanny, sparking Jai’s latest ruse. Pretending to be a woman, he introduces himself as “Shrimati Lakshmi Godbole” and applies for the job. With the aid of a drunken makeup artist, Joseph Joseph, Jai undergoes a complete and convincing transformation into the dignified elderly Marathi woman Lakshmi Godbole. The interview is a mixed bag of hope and skepticism, but the Bhardwaj family gradually welcomes Lakshmi, especially after Bharti witnesses her first-aid response when an accident befalls the child.

As Lakshmi settles into the household, Jai crafts a careful schedule so his real work never interferes with his disguise’s duties. Apart from Joseph, Bharti is the only one who sees through Lakshmi’s true identity, while Banwarilal Pandit Banwarilal Pandit, the household secretary, grows wary of the newcomer’s presence—fueled by concerns about money, manners, and a rivaled sense of control. Durgaprasad’s plan to marry Janki off to her childhood friend Dr Rohit Dr Rohit intensifies the tension, setting the stage for a sequence of dramatic events that tests every member of the family.

A crisis in the market leads to an attempted assault on Janki by unknown assailants, and Lakshmi—Jai in disguise—makes a timely rescue, saving both life and modesty. The once-skeptical patriarch begins to rethink his stance after witnessing Lakshmi’s bravery, and the possibility of a reconciliation gains steam. Yet the drama thickens when Shiraz, Jai’s old friend and a struggling chef now working in a shop, is recruited by Lakshmi to pose as Pandit Shivraj Sharma, a mute Brahmin cook, a ruse that even Shiraz does not fully understand. This new deception brings the household closer to Lakshmi’s benevolent influence, but it also raises the stakes for Jai, Janki, and Banwarilal.

Janki, while fond of Lakshmi’s kindness, remains wary of Jai, whose antics have already left scars. Meanwhile, Jai faces his own trials at home: a landlord named Hari who becomes infatuated with Lakshmi, and Ratna, a hustling admirer who circles Jai’s life with unwelcome intensity. Durgaprasad’s heart softens toward Lakshmi, even proposing marriage, as Lakshmi’s presence begins to blur lines of caste and creed in a society built on rigid distinctions.

To keep the illusion alive, Lakshmi-as-Jai concocts a story that her husband has left her and converted to Christianity, a tale used to explain away the supposed absence of a husband. Jai then feeds Hari a reversed version of the truth, claiming Banwarilal is Lakshmi’s husband Haribhai, a move designed to keep Lakshmi’s identity intact and the love in Jai and Janki’s life intact. But Banwarilal’s suspicions remain, and he uses his position to sow doubt about Lakshmi’s virtue, pushing Janki toward a breaking point.

A turning point arrives when Banwarilal’s machinations reveal the ruse, driving a wedge between Lakshmi and Janki and intensifying the emotional storm surrounding the couple. The misinterpretation is so severe that Janki believes Jai might be unfaithful, prompting her to leave her father’s home and seek reconciliation with Jai. A crisis moment follows when Janki, overwhelmed by what she suspects, contemplates suicide; Jai/Lakshmi races to save her on a speeding motorcycle, and the truth about Jai’s disguise finally surfaces in the river, where the two confess their identities and intentions.

In the aftermath, Janki learns the full story of Jai’s acts, his unwavering devotion, and Lakshmi’s role in bringing the family back together. The couple works to repair the hurt and, in a bold bid to protect their newfound honesty, fabricates Lakshmi’s death to placate Banwarilal and silence other looming threats. Joseph’s accidental revelations are contained, and Jai reassures everyone that Lakshmi will always endure in the hearts of those who knew her. With the path cleared of deceit and fear, Jai and Janki choose to remarry, affirming a second chance built on trust, resilience, and a shared vow to look beyond appearances and tradition. The story closes on their renewed bond, a testament to love’s power to rewrite boundaries and heal wounds that once seemed permanent.
