In a gritty resurgence to the streets of New York City, King David, a notorious criminal haunted by a troubled past, embarks on a quest for redemption as he aims to settle old scores with the ruthless drug lord known as Moon. A self-described chronicler of his life, David keeps meticulous audio journals, often revolving around an enigmatic woman named Edna, whose profound influence he frequently reflects upon. Upon his return to the city, he encounters Jasper, a barkeep who bears an intense animosity towards him, alongside Paul, a struggling writer whose life is on the brink of a dramatic transformation.

As David navigates the perilous waters of his past, he attempts to make amends with Moon, yet Jasper warns him that his presence has not gone unnoticed; the drug lord will stop at nothing to collect what is due. Mike, one of Moon’s steadfast henchmen, is dispatched to retrieve the debt, showcasing an unsettling obsession with David that raises more questions than it answers. Before the payment can be exchanged, Mike is cautioned to avoid attracting unnecessary police scrutiny.

Accompanied by his loyal friend Blue and his sister Ella, David agrees to meet with Mike at a predetermined location to hand over the payment. However, as underlying tensions simmer, Mike’s anxiety becomes increasingly tangible. Blue ultimately gives Mike the nod to proceed. The brief yet tense transaction quickly devolves into an ambush, with Mike confronting David and violently attacking him, leaving him weakened and battered in a gutter. In a desperate struggle for survival, David uses an ice pick to injure Blue before both men hurriedly flee the scene. At that moment, Paul happens to pass by, stops, and heroically offers to drive the injured David – a complete stranger – to the hospital.

Devastation strikes when news of King David’s demise spreads, yet his last will shocks Paul by bequeathing him all his possessions, including a rare Stutz Blackhawk and a mysterious collection of audiotapes. Meanwhile, Moon’s paranoia escalates as he fears attracting police attention after Mike’s failed collection attempt.

As Blue lies injured in a parking garage, Moon orders him and Ella to wait for a ride to the hospital, but instead, he orchestrates their execution as his two henchmen are sent to murder them, leaving Mike aghast. In an unexpected turn of events, Mike regains his composure and retaliates against the hitmen, albeit consumed by grief over Ella’s untimely death. Burning with the desire for revenge against Moon, Mike pledges to make him pay for his treachery.

As Paul delves deeper into the revelations within the journal, he uncovers David’s tumultuous life story. His experiences highlight a series of unfortunate events leading to a disastrous drug incident on the East Coast, which drives David to seek redemption on the West Coast. Throughout this journey, he finds support and comfort within the Vietnamese community while cultivating a romantic connection with Janet (played by a charismatic actress), who becomes increasingly enamored with his world. Unbeknownst to her, David’s toxic behaviors begin to amplify, as he subtly manipulates her, exacerbating her addiction.

As the present-day narrative unfolds, Moon, filled with malice, sends a pair of merciless henchmen after Mike, only to uncover Paul’s involvement through various eyewitness accounts. Moreover, Moon discovers Paul was David’s driver to the hospital, further intensifying his aggression.

Paul grows engrossed in the journal’s disclosures, tracing David’s subsequent actions after he abandons Janet for Juanita, a spirited college student he meets at an upscale bar. As their relationship appears to flourish, a sinister undercurrent emerges: David’s opulent lifestyle is supported by his illegal drug dealings, which he engages in recklessly. Initially resistant to addiction, Juanita soon finds her life spiraling out of control as she succumbs to David’s substances.

Tensions mount when Paul uncovers a hidden sum of $250,000 in David’s trunk, coinciding with the relentless pursuit by Moon’s henchmen. In an electrifying climax, Mike seizes the opportunity to eradicate Moon, tracking him through a taxi to an isolated alleyway and infiltrating a bathhouse to deliver a crippling blow that ultimately claims Moon’s life.

As Paul listens to the final entries detailing Juanita’s tumultuous journey, he becomes inexorably entwined in her sorrowful narrative. Her descent into addiction culminates in David abandoning her once again, only for her to return, now burdened by a crippling dependence on drugs. Desperate and lacking dignity, she proposes a Faustian bargain, requesting intimacy in exchange for his help. This cruel arrangement propels Juanita further into ruin, as the shame intensifies her downward spiral.

Reaching a boiling point, Juanita demands David fund her rehabilitation or face exposure to the authorities. Consumed by rage, David resorts to a horrific act of vengeance, mixing heroin with battery acid, condemning both Juanita and Edna to a fatal, seizure-inducing fate. Through a haunting flashback, it becomes painfully evident that David is Mike’s biological father, with his earlier brutal attack on Mike preceding his poisoning of Edna – a trauma that leaves a lasting scar.

The tape concludes with David pondering the significance of his return to the East Coast, hinting at a dark desire for redemption through reconciling with Moon and confronting the legacy of Edna’s child.
