A retired aging mobster and boxer known as Thug works for Gangster Charlie Connor, alongside Charlie’s son Kyle, who is still learning the ropes and trying to master the tricks of the trade. Thug guides Kyle through the rough world of transferring goods and the murky details surrounding them, all while staying firmly on the margins of legality. Thug lives alone, and for a long while, his memory has been failing him; soon he is diagnosed with CTE, with the grim prognosis that dementia will erase the things he once relied on within a short span of time.
When despair nearly drives him to take his own life, a moment of haunting clarity occurs: he halts his plan after spotting a child watching him. This glimpse of innocence becomes a turning point, and Thug resolves to keep living and to atone for the sins of his past. In a bar he meets a woman simply known as Woman, who becomes a steady presence in his life, offering companionship and a sense of steadiness in his otherwise turbulent routine. With his new purpose, he attempts to reconnect with his estranged family, hoping to bridge the gulf between his former life and the life he might still lead.
Thug learns that his son’s death occurred years earlier, a loss that Daisy—his daughter and a single parent to two kids—has long struggled to come to terms with. Daisy’s resentment toward him runs deep, rooted in a belief that her grandfather, father, and even her husband deserted the family when they were most in need. Despite the cold reception, Thug pursues a fragile reconnection with Daisy and a wary friendship with her grandson, Dre. He even visits and befriends Dre during a trip to a boxing club, trying to pass on a sense of discipline and hope. Meanwhile, Daisy gradually comes to terms with Thug’s illness and the truth about his diagnosis, admitting she didn’t know how serious his condition was and expressing a willingness to open up to him again.
As the world Thug inhabits grows darker, his enemies tighten their grip. Charlie and Kyle reveal that Thug has outlived his usefulness to the organization because of his advancing dementia, and they replace him. The revelation stings, but Thug discovers a shocking truth: Kyle was behind the plan to have him assassinated. In a fierce confrontation, Thug overpowers his former allies, shoots Kyle in the thigh, and forces Charlie to hand over money and weapons before ultimately killing Charlie.
With money finally in hand, Thug pays a broker to secure Daisy’s house and gives a portion of his funds to Woman, ensuring she is cared for. He returns to the brothel where Araceli, a girl who once sought his help, had hoped to be bought free; only to learn that she has been killed. Enraged, Thug orders the pimps to release all the girls held there and allows them to escape. The escape is brutal, as one of the assailants shoots Thug, and another pimp lunges in an attempt to strangle him, only to be stopped when a terrified girl kills him in the commotion.
The story closes with Thug retreating to his apartment to face dawn and his fate. He dies as the first light spills across the room, a quiet end to a life marked by violence, memory loss, and a determined search for atonement.
