What Happens in Naina: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Naina (2005) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

During a solar eclipse in 1986, young Naina Shah, Urmila Matondkar, sits in the backseat of her England-based father's car when a shard of windshield shatters and blinds her. Her parents perish in the crash, and she is raised by her paternal grandmother, Amardeep Jha as Somabai. Years later, a successful corneal transplant restores her vision, but she begins to experience unsettling vision problems: she sees hooded figures and senses people dying, a pattern that a cautious psychiatrist, Dr. Samir Patel, Anuj Sawhney, initially attributes to hallucinations. When Naina later reports seeing someone else in her mirror, Dr. Patel decides to trace the donor of the cornea.

This search leads them to the impoverished village of New Bhuj, Gujarat, where locals believe the donor's sight comes with a dark curse. Naina learns the donor’s name: Khemi, Malavika, a girl born with the ability to see a person’s imminent death and thus ostracised by her community. A tragic arc unfolds as Khemi’s attempt to save the village from a great fire is met with disbelief and blame, culminating in her suicide.

Back in England, Naina resolves to act, trying to save people from a fire, but the effort ends in another accident that costs her sight once more. Yet she does not regret the loss, because she is sustained by the love of Dr. Samir Patel and her grandmother, Somabai.

Naina Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Naina (2005): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Naina start seeing hooded figures after her corneal transplant?

Naina sees hooded figures because the cornea donor, Khemi, was born with the ability to see imminent death. After Khemi's suicide, her eyes were transplanted to Naina, and the visions are echoes of Khemi's supernatural gift. The hooded figures represent the death Khemi could perceive in people, now manifesting through Naina's new sight.

Foreshadowing: The film hints at a supernatural connection early on when Naina first experiences unsettling visions after the transplant.

  • hooded figures
  • corneal transplant
  • visions
  • supernatural
  • Khemi
Q2

What happened to Khemi in the village of New Bhuj?

Khemi was a girl born with the ability to see when someone is about to die, which made her an outcast in her village. When she tried to warn the villagers about an approaching fire, they didn't believe her. After the fire devastated the village, Khemi was blamed for the tragedy and, overwhelmed by despair, she committed suicide.

Foreshadowing: The villagers' superstition and fear of Khemi's gift foreshadow the tragic outcome.

  • Khemi
  • New Bhuj
  • village fire
  • ostracised
  • suicide
Q3

Why does Naina lose her sight again at the end of the movie?

After returning to England, Naina attempts to save people from a fire. During this effort, she suffers an accident that costs her eyesight once more. This creates a tragic循环 where she loses the very gift she received from Khemi's cornea.

Foreshadowing: The film sets up this reversal when Naina decides to actively try to save people, echoing Khemi's failed attempt to warn her village.

  • second blindness
  • fire accident
  • sacrifice
  • loss of sight
Q4

How is Khemi connected to Naina's visions of death?

Khemi's cornea carries her supernatural ability to perceive death. When transplanted to Naina, this gift transferred along with the tissue. Naina's visions of dying people and hooded figures are not hallucinations but the continuation of Khemi's psychic ability through the donated eyes.

Foreshadowing: Dr. Patel initially dismisses the visions as psychological, but the investigation reveals their supernatural origin.

  • corneal transplant
  • psychic ability
  • death perception
  • Khemi's eyes
Q5

Why was Khemi ostracised by her village?

Khemi was ostracised because she was born with the ability to see when a person is about to die. The villagers viewed this as a cursed gift rather than a supernatural ability. Her warnings about impending death were seen as omens rather than genuine attempts to help, leading to her isolation and eventual tragedy.

Foreshadowing: The villagers' fear of Khemi's sight is established early in her backstory.

  • Khemi
  • ostracism
  • village
  • cursed gift
  • death perception
Q6

Why doesn't Naina regret losing her sight at the end?

Naina doesn't regret losing her sight again because she found genuine love and support from Dr. Samir Patel and her grandmother Somabai. The relationships she built give her meaning beyond her vision, and she chooses connection and purpose over visual ability.

Foreshadowing: Her growing bond with Dr. Patel throughout the film prepares her for this emotional acceptance.

  • acceptance
  • love
  • Dr. Samir Patel
  • grandmother
  • inner peace
Q7

What caused the solar eclipse accident that blinded Naina?

During a solar eclipse in 1986, Naina was riding in her father's car in England when the windshield shattered, possibly due to the unusual lighting conditions or a freak accident. Glass shards struck young Naina in the eyes, blinding her instantly while the crash killed both her parents.

Foreshadowing: The eclipse sets a supernatural tone from the very beginning of Naina's story.

  • solar eclipse
  • car accident
  • childhood trauma
  • parents death
Q8

Why does Dr. Patel investigate the cornea donor?

Dr. Patel investigates the cornea donor after Naina reports seeing someone else in her mirror, which he cannot explain through psychological diagnosis alone. He hopes to find a medical explanation for her disturbing visions rather than accepting they are supernatural.

Foreshadowing: This investigation leads directly to uncovering Khemi's tragic story.

  • Dr. Samir Patel
  • cornea donor
  • investigation
  • medical mystery
Q9

What is the curse associated with Khemi's eyes?

The villagers in New Bhuj believed Khemi's eyes were cursed because of her ability to see death. They thought her sight brought misfortune and that anyone receiving her eyes would inherit this curse. This superstition drives the village's hostility toward Khemi and later toward Naina.

Foreshadowing: The locals' warnings about the donor's cursed sight prepare Naina for the truth.

  • curse
  • Khemi
  • village superstition
  • eyes
  • misfortune
Q10

Why does Naina try to save people from the fire in England?

Naina tries to save people from the fire because she experiences visions of people dying, just like Khemi did. Rather than simply observing death as Khemi did, she chooses to act and try to prevent it, rejecting the passive role that led to Khemi's despair.

Foreshadowing: Her determination to act contrasts with Khemi's failure to be believed.
