Half Light (2006) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Half Light (2006), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Rachel Carlson [Demi Moore] is a successful American murder mystery author living in London with her five-year-old son Thomas Carlson [Jordan El-Balawi] and her second husband Brian [Henry Ian Cusick], a talented book editor who has struggled to publish his own work. When Thomas drowns while playing along a canal by their home, the tragedy shatters Rachel, strains her marriage, and halts her latest manuscript. The loss cuts deep, and months later she finds it almost impossible to finish the book or sustain her relationship with Brian as they stand on the verge of divorce.

In search of peace and a path to completion, Rachel retreats to a remote cottage on the rugged Scottish coast. There, the line between grief and reality begins to blur as she is visited by the ghost of her son, who at times drags her toward the cold sea and, in other moments, nudges a magnet on the refrigerator as if trying to convey a message. A local town psychic confirms that the spirit may indeed be trying to speak, but the locals warn that the psychic could simply be a troubled woman chasing signs in the shadows.

As Rachel wrestles with what she’s experiencing, she finds herself drawn to Angus [Hans Matheson], a handsome lighthouse keeper whose presence brings both comfort and danger. Their budding romance offers a glimmer of hope, yet it also orbits a chilling truth: seven years earlier, Angus killed himself after murdering his wife and her lover in the lighthouse. The more Rachel investigates, the more fragile her grip on reality appears, and the harder she fights to separate truth from illusion. The local library’s archives of the tragedy begin to disappear, and Sharon Winton [Kate Isitt], Rachel’s best friend and a writer for a British tabloid, vanishes after Rachel witnesses a murder in the lighthouse.

Gradually it becomes clear that Brian is having an affair with Sharon, and together they hire a man to impersonate Angus to push Rachel over the edge and make the murder look like a suicide. As Rachel clings to the hope that her deceased son is warning her of real danger, she is drugged by Sharon and Brian and dumped into the sea. She survives when the keys to the chains fall into the water, freeing her at the last possible moment. She makes her way to the lighthouse, where the mystery and the revenge converge.

In a tense confrontation, Sharon is fatally struck in the kitchen after a struggle, and Brian is killed by Patrick, a man who is possessed by the spirit of Angus, in a scene that echoes the lighthouse tragedy. Patrick jumps from the tower just as Angus did, sealing the haunting in a grim cycle of fate. With the truth finally laid bare, Rachel chooses to end her flight from the past. She leaves the town with a vow to protect the lighthouse from intrusion so Angus’s spirit can rest, and returns to London not to mourn but to celebrate the life of her son, honoring him as the living memory that guides her forward. In the end, the narrative rests on a quiet, resolute determination to cherish the life that remains.
