Arundhati (2009) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Arundhati (2009), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Arundhati, a woman believed to be the reincarnation of her great-grandmother Jejamma, is engaged to Rahul. As they journey toward Gadwal, a relative named Ramana and his wife Susheela encounter a mysterious entity and are led to an abandoned mansion. Inside, they stumble upon a tomb and fall prey to an illusion crafted by that presence. Arundhati’s family travels to Gadwal after an accident caused by the same force that haunts her grandfather Bhupathi Raja Jr., pulling them into a lineage of danger and unsettled history.

Arundhati seeks help from Anwar, a Fakir who warns her of the peril ahead, yet she presses on with a stubborn belief in her fate. The entity eventually draws her back to the desolate mansion, where she is stopped by a man but ignores him as the lure grows stronger. Inside, she confronts the tomb, only to be dragged out by Anwar, who warns her again by presenting a glimpse of a ghostly presence. This moment begins to blur the lines between the living and the dead, between memory and prophecy.

Determined to understand her connection to Jejamma, Arundhati learns that the man she encountered outside is actually her grandfather’s late elder brother. She enlists the house maid Chandramma to reveal the tale of Jejamma, setting the stage for a vivid flashback that unravels a family tragedy. In this past, Raja Chinna Venkata Rangarayudu rules a palace where his daughters Bhargavi and Arundhati Sr. live under the shadow of Pasupathi, Bhargavi’s husband and a man whose cruelty knows no bounds. He drags the family through abuse, including the rape and murder of Arundhati’s former dance instructor, a crime that ignites a deep resolve in Arundhati’s bloodline. Bhargavi, overwhelmed by the horror, takes her own life, and during the funeral, Pasupathi’s arrogance earns the scorn of Gadwal’s people.

In a brutal turn, Jejamma expels Pasupathi from the palace, only for him to be found alive by a group of Aghoras—masters of dark magic who take him in and teach him to wield that forbidden power. He returns seven years later as a formidable aghora, ready to exact revenge by infiltrating the mansion and killing innocents. He then sets his sights on Arundhati, intent on consummating a brutal ritual before sacrificing her soul to his deity, Aghora. A pivotal moment arrives when Jejamma’s teachings enable Arundhati to perform a dance that undermines Pasupathi’s control, and Jejamma’s spirit appears to entomb him alive in the abandoned abode.

Chandramma later reveals the dire forecast: Pasupathi’s vengeful spirit continues to threaten Arundhati long after the tomb is sealed. Pasupathi manipulates Ramana to release his own essence, wreaking havoc on Gadwal and forcing Arundhati to confront him once more. Anwar and Chandramma intervene as Arundhati slowly embraces the truth of her heritage: she is Jejamma’s reincarnation, bound to confront the malevolent force that haunted her family for generations. The crisis intensifies as Pasupathi’s spectral presence roams the town, leaving destruction in its wake despite being trapped in the tomb.

To end the terror, Jejamma travels to the Aghoras and learns that the only solution is a self-sacrificing act: to give her life so that her mortal remains can be forged into a weapon strong enough to kill Pasupathi’s soul. Jejamma accepts this fate, bidding farewell to her loved ones and hinting that the first girl born in her family will carry her memory and name. Her body is laid to rest, but the Aghoras fashion a potent weapon from her bones, a last instrument in the age-old battle against dark magic.

As Arundhati and Anwar press forward to retrieve the weapon, Pasupathi menaces Rahul and triggers a catastrophic accident. Arundhati drives to Rahul’s aid, confronting Pasupathi in a struggle that costs Chandramma her life and drives the family to the brink of despair. To protect those she loves, Arundhati makes a harrowing choice: she offers herself to Pasupathi in a desperate bid to end his threat. When Anwar arrives with the weapon, Pasupathi assaults him, killing him before he can reveal the weapon’s true power. Desperate and resigned, Arundhati tries to end her life, but her blood activates the forged weapon and Jejamma’s presence overtakes her body. In a climactic confrontation, Jejamma strikes Pasupathi down, the castle collapses around them, and Arundhati is presumed dead.

Yet hope endures: Arundhati survives and is later recognized by a little girl from her family, signaling that Jejamma has truly returned in her rightful form. The tale closes on a note of renewal and continuity, with the living and the beyond coexisting in the memory of Gadwal, where the legacy of Jejamma continues through Arundhati.
