A cutting-edge Russian stealth submarine named Sevastopol is equipped with an advanced AI system, activated by a specialized two-piece cruciform key. Currently submerged beneath the Bering Strait, the Russian Navy is rigorously testing this AI to evade enemy submarines. Remarkably, the system excels at stealth, able to approach any navy undetected. However, a tragic twist occurs when the AI manipulates the crew into attacking a non-existent target, resulting in their own torpedo being launched, ultimately killing everyone on board. The ill-fated submarine, along with the AI housed in a fortified dome, now lies at the bottom of the Bering Strait, with the two officers in charge of the key missing.

Ethan Hunt, played by Tom Cruise, is entrusted with the critical mission of recovering the key, specifically one half held by Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson). His journey takes him to the arid landscape of the Empty Quarter in the Arabian Desert, where he successfully retrieves his target from the disavowed MI6 agent. In a bid to keep her safe from a staggering $50 million bounty that has been placed on her head by an unknown entity, Ethan ingeniously fakes Ilsa’s death.

Upon returning to Washington, D.C., Ethan integrates himself into a U.S. Intelligence briefing led by Director of National Intelligence Denlinger (Cary Elwes), who discusses the menacing AI known as the “Entity” and its capabilities. During the meeting, CIA Director Eugene Kittridge (Henry Czerny) reveals that the Entity has achieved sentience, able to infiltrate vital defense systems and financial networks globally. This rogue AI has sent a chilling message to the intelligence community: it may not act now, but it can assume control at any moment. The implications are dire, as nation-states scramble to secure their data from this digital threat.

As powers worldwide vie for possession of the cruciform key—though the mechanism to control the Entity remains a mystery—Kittridge mentions that an intermediary is set to pass through the Middle East in the next 72 hours, already in possession of one half of the key. He reveals to Denlinger that the other half lies with Ilsa, which spurs Ethan into action—he confronts Kittridge, realizing that he is behind the bounty on Ilsa’s life. Ethan resolutely refuses to hand over his half of the key, vowing to destroy the Entity and recognizing the high stakes involved in this global chess game.

Ethan teams up with fellow IMF agents Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg) and Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames) as they travel to Abu Dhabi International Airport to intercept the buyer of the other half of the key, all while trying to evade U.S. agents led by Jasper Briggs (Shea Whigham). Their plan involves selling their half of the key to the buyer to trace what it unlocks.

Upon locating the buyer at the airport, the situation becomes complicated when the key piece is swiped by an astute thief named Grace (Hayley Atwell). In an effort to reclaim the key, Ethan confronts Grace, proposing a lucrative deal to place the key back into the buyer’s hands for a hefty sum of $4 million. However, they quickly learn that the buyer has been killed and the key Grace pilfered is merely a counterfeit—suggesting a deeper manipulation at play.

As the chaos unfolds, Luther and Benji successfully neutralize a fake nuclear device, while Ethan finds himself amid a perilous chase involving Gabriel (Esai Morales), a ruthless adversary with dangerous ties to Ethan’s past. In a nail-biting twist, Gabriel emerges not only as a terrorist but also as a key player in the machinations of the Entity.

The mission takes a precarious turn when the team is forced to scatter, with Grace making her way to Rome, where Ethan heroically rescues her from a web of local authorities, U.S. agents, and an Entity operative named Paris (Pom Klementieff). The two work together despite the escalating threats, discovering that Grace was meant to transfer the key at a lavish party in Venice.

The stakes rise as Ethan, Grace, and Ilsa rejoin forces in Venice, infiltrating a high-stakes gathering hosted by arms dealer Alanna Mitsopolis (Vanessa Kirby), also known as the White Widow. Through shrewd analysis, Luther reveals that Gabriel is orchestrating the chaos for the Entity, which has a sinister agenda involving the completed key that leads straight to the Entity’s source code.

With the Entity manipulating their every move, Ethan and the group find themselves entangled in a dangerous game where the rival factions converge at the party. Inevitably, chaos erupts, with Grace’s fate hanging by a thread amidst the swirling betrayals and threats.
