Chun-yau Bryan Leung is a gifted kung fu fighter who, as a child, is taken in by a humble, wealthy man who already has a resentful young son. Raised together, Chun-yau grows into a formidable martial artist, while his adoptive brother Cho-wing Chang Yi becomes consumed with jealousy over Chun-yau’s bond with Yuet-yee, his new wife. Yuet-yee, played by Fanny Wang, enters Chun-yau’s life with a fragile happiness, but the shadow of Cho-wing’s wrath always lingers. Cho-wing’s anger is not just personal; it’s deadly. He scarred himself in a remote childhood accident, wearing a jade patch over his eye as a constant reminder of the feud that fuels his hatred. The couple’s attempts at quiet domestic life only sharpen the danger as Cho-wing’s gang closes in, forcing them to live on the run while Cho-wing relentlessly hunts them down.

Fatty [Sammo Hung Kam-Bo] spots Chun-yau saving an old man from a crushing accident, and challenges the masterful fighter. The encounter is electrifying, yet Chun-yau refuses to become Fatty’s student, not because he doubts Fatty’s talent, but because he fears the attention and the trouble that come with it. Fatty, bound by a family vow to learn kung fu through the one who defeats him, persists in following Chun-yau’s path. This meeting then intersects with Chun-yau’s quiet war against Cho-wing, as the couple tries to keep a low profile and protect themselves from the blood feud that haunts them.

When Chun-yau’s stepfather lies near death, the two lovers visit him, hoping to say their goodbyes. The moment they step into the room, Cho-wing’s men descend, a violent ambush set to end Chun-yau’s life. Fatty arrives just in time to lend a hand, and together they fend off the attackers. Yet Yuet-yee’s courage falters under the relentless pressure. She begs Cho-wing to end the violence and offers to walk away with him, hoping to spare Chun-yau from further bloodshed. The request is met with pain, and Yuet-yee chooses to leave Chun-yau for good, deciding to stay with Cho-wing rather than endure life on the run. Devastated, Chun-yau watches as Yuet-yee declares her decision and then, overwhelmed by despair, she takes her own life.

With Yuet-yee dead, Chun-yau is left to grieve while the world around him continues its brutal cycle. He returns to the old craftsman’s teachings and begins to train Fatty, passing on the iron discipline of the Iron Cross that his stepfather had taught him. Their bond deepens into a hard-won trust as Fatty learns, and Chun-yau’s grief slowly begins to translate into purpose. Yet Fatty’s hunger for loyalty and a home remains, and it leads to a dangerous ruse. Fatty reveals to his sifu that he has learned enough to stage Chun-yau’s supposed death, a ruse designed to free Fatty’s mother who has been held hostage by Cho-wing. The plan works in part: Fatty and his mother are freed, but not without cost. As they attempt to slip away, gang members strike, stabbing Fatty and his mother, a blow that tests the limits of Chun-yau’s resolve and forces him to confront the consequences of their dangerous plot.

In the wake of the ambush, a new, grittier confrontation unfolds. A hired expert in the Southern Eagle Claw appears, and Chun-yau faces him with the same relentless intensity that has defined his life. The two are evenly matched, each testing the other’s limits in a brutal, elemental exchange. When Chun-yau finally defeats the expert, the gang learns that Chun-yau is not dead but alive and very dangerous. Cho-wing meets his end in a brutal street confrontation, hurled into a building’s supporting column, and the feud that defined their lives comes to a definitive reckoning.

The story closes in a quiet, almost haunting moment. Chun-yau pays respects at the graves of his wife and his former student, a stark reminder of what was sacrificed in their battles. A beggar who bears a striking resemblance to Fatty appears, asking about those who have passed. In a final, revealing twist, Chun-yau recognizes the familiar face and races after the figure, leaving the audience with a sense that the past, though momentarily laid to rest, remains ever-present, lurking just out of sight in the shadowed corners of their world.
