Ochayi, a widow, lives in Karisalpatti with her son Veerannan and faces pressure from Mookkaiya Thevar to secure a dowry. The conflict intensifies due to a long-standing land dispute and the rival families' pride. She stands firm to protect her family's dignity, resisting his advances.

Mookkaiya Thevar carries on an extramarital affair with Hamsavalli and spends money on her lifestyle. He uses the threat of the dowry to pressure Ochayi and to bolster his standing with his own relatives. Ochayi's refusal to yield further fuels the family feud.

A new teacher joins the village school and quickly falls in love with Muthupechi. The budding romance offers a glimmer of hope amid the feuds, even as old alliances threaten to pull them apart. The teacher's presence introduces a possible future beyond village politics.

When Muthupechi reaches puberty, Mookkaiya organises a ceremony but excludes Ochayi and Veerannan from performing rituals. Veerannan erupts in rage, and the ruckus draws village support to demand inclusion. The ritual eventually proceeds, and Muthupechi feels seen for the first time.

Veerannan begins secretly meeting Muthupechi, ignoring her previous neglect. He promises to marry her despite social barriers and family feuds. The couple's romance deepens, threatening the peace of the village.

During the jallikattu festival, Veerannan defeats Malaichamy's bull and wins a gold chain as a prize. Enraged, Malaichamy schemes to claim Muthupechi by turning the win into a bet he can control. He pressures Mookkaiya to declare that the winner of the contest will marry Muthupechi.

Mookkaiya realizes his boastful gambit has created a dangerous situation. He kills his own bull to back away, hoping to salvage his pride, but Malaichamy presses on. The threat to Muthupechi's future intensifies the feud between the villages.

Malaichamy approaches the Karisalpatti Panchayat to demand Muthupechi by force. The Panchayat refuses and suggests Malaichamy forget the bet. Malaichamy attacks Veerannan; the villagers fight back, and the school is forced to close, with teachers running classes outdoors.

Malaichamy's pressure leads many Karisalpatti women to return to their own village, raising the stakes for honor. Muthupechi grows anxious as Veerannan remains missing. The village teacher continues to send letters to Muthupechi in Veerannan's name, keeping hope alive.

A year passes without a resolution. Muthupechi receives two letters—one announcing Veerannan's arrival and one from the teacher. The next day, Veerannan returns with his wife, shocking Ochayi and Muthupechi.

Veerannan explains that he joined the army and married another girl to protect Muthupechi from Malaichamy's pressure. Muthupechi begins to understand the villagers' sacrifices and the complexity of love and duty. The revelation deepens the emotional stakes for everyone.

Malaichamy returns with his men and abducts Muthupechi, stripping her from the village's protection. The villagers feel betrayed and rally to retrieve her, while Veerannan vows to rescue her. The confrontation shifts from rumor to direct violent confrontation.

The villagers pressure Veerannan to take Muthupechi as a second wife to preserve village honor, but she refuses for Veerannan's welfare. A fierce fight erupts as Veerannan and his allies confront Malaichamy's forces to recover her. Veerannan defeats Malaichamy, but his wife is killed in the clash.

Muthupechi dies after realizing Veerannan's true love, leaving him to mourn in the wake of the victory. The village reckons with the cost of pride, feuds, and loyalty, as the couple's love becomes a tragedy. The ending leaves a grim reflection on honor and sacrifice.
