Dev Karan Singh Aamir Khan is a charming, debt‑ridden painter who moves through life like a carefree Casanova. In a bid to secure his future, he agrees to marry Anita Singhania Deepti Bhatnagar, the daughter of Singhania, a wealthy tycoon. Priya Verma Manisha Koirala, a patient and devoted music teacher for children, is engaged to Raj Anil Kapoor, a successful man who once helped her in a moment of need. The two couples cross paths aboard a cruise, where Dev’s eyes are drawn to Priya. He quickly becomes fond of her, and though Priya is initially unimpressed, a genuine connection grows between them.
Despite their growing attraction, both Dev and Priya are bound by prior commitments, so they agree to handle their feelings and arrange to meet again in six months on Valentine’s Day to see if love can truly conquer circumstance.
Over the next six months, Dev breaks off his engagement with Anita and pours himself into his art, supported by his loyal friend Nattu [Neeraj Vora]. His paintings win attention at auctions and he begins to find real success. Meanwhile, Priya realizes that leaving Raj would be unfair, and she writes him a letter explaining her predicament. Raj reads the letter and, in a generous turn, encourages Priya to pursue happiness with Dev.
Tragedy strikes when Priya, on her way to meet Dev, is hit by a car and loses the use of her legs. Dev, who waited all night for her, believes she has rejected him, unaware of the accident. Priya pleads with Raj not to reveal the truth, choosing to spare Dev the burden. She shifts her focus back to teaching and founding a musical academy for children, keeping her passion for music alive.
Undeterred by heartbreak, Dev’s star rises as a painter, and he becomes a celebrated artist. At one of his exhibitions, Priya encounters a sentimental painting depicting her speaking to his beloved grandmother, whom Dev had introduced to her during the cruise. Dev had refused to sell that painting, saying it was meant for Priya alone, but when the host learns that the buyer is someone who understands the emotion behind the image, he gifts the painting to her.
Months later, a chance meeting at a theatre gathering brings Priya and Raj together again. Priya once more asks Raj to stay quiet, but Dev’s realization of the painting’s symbolism deepens as he notices the same artwork in another room. The truth about Priya’s condition becomes clear, and the moment turns emotional as the couple embraces. Dev reassures Priya that his love will endure no matter what.
The two are finally married, with Raj officiating the ceremony. Dev carries Priya through the wedding rounds, surrounded by Nattu and the children from the Musical Academy, marking a new chapter built on forgiveness, resilience, and enduring love.
