Vasantha Maligai

Anand Sivaji Ganesan is a wealthy playboy known for his heavy drinking. On a flight, he crosses paths with Latha, an ambitious air hostess Sridevi, who lives with her father, Major Sundarrajan [major-sundarrajan], and her busy family—her mother, two brothers, and a sister. Her mother objects to her job as an air hostess and pleads for a change so she can be home at more decent hours, even as Latha remains the family’s main breadwinner.

While Anand is celebrating his birthday in a pub near his home, Latha arrives for a job interview with the manager. The man, who uses his position to threaten her, tries to assault her. Anand hears her scream, steps in to subdue the manager, and drives Latha home to safety. The next day, Latha returns the coat he lent her and, impressed by her, asks for a job—so he hires her as his secretary.

A tour of Anand’s home follows, where Latha meets his mother, his elder brother Vijay K. Balaji, and Vijay’s wife. Latha quickly notices Anand’s alcoholism, and she contemplates resigning. Yet a servant persuades her not to, noting that Anand’s behavior has softened since she arrived. Anand’s fiancée visits, complaining that she no longer wishes to marry a man who drinks, while his sister-in-law suspects Latha of stealing her sister-in-law’s affections. Latha reassures the mother that she intends to help curb Anand’s drinking.

Tensions rise when Anand is seen drinking again, this time with his servant Panchavarnam Nagesh. The servant flees, but Anand drinks on. In a heated moment, Latha throws a glass in anger, prompting Anand to hurl a bottle at her forehead. Realizing the gravity of his act, Anand destroys all his liquor and vows never to drink again. He shares the pain of his past—both his father and his Ayya (a beloved elder figure) have died—explaining why the idea of a fresh start resonates with him. He even reveals plans to build a palace for the woman he truly loves, naming it Vasantha Maligai (the palace of spring).

To seal this new life, Anand brings Latha to the ambitious new home. Everyone expects to meet the woman who has captured his heart, and Anand asks Latha to meet the woman behind the dream. He even shows her a reflection in a separate room, hinting that she is the object of his deepest affection. Vijay witnesses this moment and concocts a false tale about Latha having stolen his wife’s jewelry, sowing seeds of doubt in Anand. The rumor unsettles Anand, who questions Latha, prompting her to flee. Soon he learns of Vijay’s malicious plan and clears up the misunderstanding, but the damage lingers.

The delay strains their bond, and Anand becomes seriously ill. Meanwhile, Latha receives a marriage proposal. Anand’s mother visits to apologize to Latha, and Latha invites her to the wedding. Later, Anand’s mother reveals to him that Latha should marry Anand, shifting the dynamic again. When Latha finally goes to the palace, she finds Anand in a fragile state from love and sorrow; she does not know that in a moment of desperation, he had drunk poison. He collapses, is hospitalized, and after a difficult recovery, the two are reunited in a renewed, hopeful bond.

Throughout this saga, the emotional weight of love, trust, and family duty drives each choice, painting a portrait of two people learning to balance desire with responsibility. The glittering set pieces and grand design of Vasantha Maligai underscore a romance that endures through misgivings, revelations, and a poignant test of loyalty.
