Hai-Tang, the star of the Chinese Troupe, and Lieutenant Boris Boriskoff, the Grand Duke’s loyal adjutant, share a love that defies the rigid codes of power and status. Their relationship becomes a fragile thread that intertwines romance with danger, pulling them into a world where loyalty to family, duty to the throne, and personal desire pull in opposite directions. As the couple navigates this perilous landscape, each decision is weighed against the looming costs to those around them.
At the Grand Duke’s farewell banquet, the troupe performs with Hai-Tang delivering song and dance that captivate the crowd. The Grand Duke’s desire for Hai-Tang becomes clear, and Lieutenant Boris Boriskoff is tasked with setting up a late-night meeting—he must arrange that Hai-Tang dines with the Grand Duke at 1 a.m. at the Orpheum. Faced with orders she does not want to follow, Hai-Tang agrees to the arrangement only because disobedience would jeopardize Boris’s position. The atmosphere thickens with tension as the room clears, leaving the Grand Duke’s entourage behind while the two lovers confront the peril of their secret bond.
Inside the Orpheum, Boris stands as a sentry outside the Grand Duke’s door while the monarch begins his pursuit of Hai-Tang, who endures fear as the Grand Duke makes his advances. In a brutal turn, the Grand Duke becomes intoxicated and assaulted Hai-Tang; the danger is defused only when her brother, Wang Hu, shoots and wounds the Grand Duke, shifting the balance of risk squarely onto Hai-Tang’s family.
The immediate consequence is severe: Wang Hu is condemned to death the following day. Boris pleads for clemency, but the Grand Duke signs the warrant for execution at dawn. In a bid to save Wang Hu, Boris enlists the help of his officer friend, Birnbaum, hoping for a staged escape. But a sudden reassignment of Theodore Alexandroff thwarts the plan, leaving Wang Hu’s fate hanging in the balance as the clock ticks.
Meanwhile, Hai-Tang confronts the Grand Duke to plead for her brother’s life. In a moment of perilous sacrifice, she offers herself to the Grand Duke, who accepts the offer and signs a reprieve to be sent to the Colonel, Col. Moravjev. The motive is grimly simple: a life saved at the cost of Hai-Tang’s own honor.
When Boris later arrives at the Grand Duke’s apartment, he searches for Hai-Tang and is warned off by the frightened court atmosphere. Hai-Tang pleads with him to stay away, while the Grand Duke secures his prize and possesses her, deepening the tragedy of the lovers’ position.
Back at the Colonel’s residence, the pardon is delivered to Yvette, the Colonel’s mistress, who refuses to wake the Colonel to read it. By the time the Colonel stirs, it is heartbreakingly almost too late, and Wang Hu’s life remains in jeopardy—yet salvation slips away at the last moment.
Hai-Tang returns home with her honor profoundly damaged and her spirit crushed. Boris, unaware of the full cost of her sacrifice, is relieved to find her there and earnestly tells her that it was he who saved her brother. She thanks him and reiterates her love, but the truth she carries is heavier than words: Hai-Tang has already taken poison, and she dies in Boris’s arms, leaving a fade-out of quiet sorrow that lingers long after the final scenes.
