Knight Without Armour

British Colonel Forrester recruits the Englishman A. J. Fothergill to spy on Russia. He adopts the alias Peter Ouranoff and goes undercover to infiltrate a revolutionary movement. His mission is to report back on plans against the government.

Peter embeds himself within the group led by Axelstein, maintaining his cover as he moves among the radicals. He collects intelligence while avoiding exposure. The circle dreams of destabilizing the regime and plots violent acts, including targeting General Vladinoff.

The radicals attempt to blow up General Vladinoff, the father of Alexandra Adraxine. The plot fails and the would-be assassin is shot. He reaches Peter's apartment, where he dies.

For his inadvertent involvement, Peter is sent to Siberia as punishment. The exile separates him from the mission and its looming consequences for Russia.

World War I devastates Russia and makes Alexandra a widow. The Bolsheviks rise to power, and in the chaos, Peter and Axelstein are freed. This upheaval sets the stage for the later Civil War.

As the Civil War breaks out, Alexandra is arrested for aristocracy and faces trial in Petrograd. Peter is assigned by Axelstein to escort her there for the proceedings. The dangerous journey begins amid growing tension.

Rather than delivering her for trial, Peter takes Alexandra to the safety of the White Army. The Whites hold for a moment, but the Reds soon gain the upper hand. Alexandra is recaptured after the White retreat.

The Red Army defeats the Whites the following day, and Alexandra is recaptured. Peter continues to resist the odds and remains devoted to her safety.

Peter steals a commission as a commissar of prisons from a drunken official and uses it to free Alexandra. They flee into the forest on Alexandra's estate, beginning a brief idyll. Their love deepens as they move toward safety.

The lovers board a train, pretending to be siblings at the railway station. A photograph of the Countess betrays their ruse, forcing them to rely on a better story. They press on with cautious optimism despite the danger.

A young Commissar Poushkoff, enamored with Alexandra, joins their journey and accompanies them on the way to Samara. He arranges to escort them for identity confirmation. An old gardener is brought in to test whether Alexandra is really the Countess.

During the long journey, the trio grows closer and hints at unspoken feelings. Alexandra tells Poushkoff that meeting him was the greatest luck they have had, and he is deeply moved. Peter and Alexandra try to steady him as the danger mounts.

At a stop, Poushkoff suggests an escape but steps away as the plan unfolds. A shot rings out as he shoots himself to provide a diversion for the lovers, buying them a chance to continue.

The lovers board a barge traveling down the Volga; Alexandra becomes seriously ill. Peter goes for a doctor but is arrested by the Whites for not having papers. The escape grows even more perilous with every passing moment.

A doctor from an international Red Cross team finds Alexandra and takes her for treatment. Peter is wounded and dressed by a Red Cross doctor as a nurse reads the departing passenger list. Upon hearing Alexandra's name, Peter crashes through the door and clings to the outside of the train, and she reaches out to him as the train speeds toward safety.
