Assigned to bomb a critical German railway junction at Schneidemühl, Flight Lt. Terrence Forbes, Errol Flynn, leads a five-man bomber crew on a mission that could cripple a key supply line for the German war effort. The team includes American Flying Officer Johnny Hammond, Ronald Reagan; Flight Sgt. Kirk Edwards, Alan Hale; Flying Officer Jed Forrest, Arthur Kennedy; and the injured Flight Sgt. Lloyd Hollis, Ronald Sinclair. Their dangerous undertaking ends with their bomber shot down near the former Polish border, and the five survivors are quickly captured by German forces.
At the German camp, the group is interviewed by Major Otto Baumeister, a calculating officer who stands at the center of their pursuit. Hammond proves his nerve by creating a distraction—pretending to explain their bomber’s tech in clever technobabble—before striking and knocking the major unconscious. With Baumeister incapacitated, Forbes and the rest seize the moment, subduing the guards, and they rummage through the major’s office. They uncover papers that reveal a hidden Messerschmitt aircraft factory and decide that getting these documents back to England is worth the risk, even if it means a perilous trek across enemy territory.
Their escape plan is bold: they attack a German patrol to procure uniforms, then slip aboard a hospital train bound for Berlin. In a stroke of cinematic luck, Göring’s private car happens to be on that same train for maintenance, and the five slip into the car to enjoy a temporary luxury while the wheels turn toward the capital. But their luck runs out just before Berlin when they’re discovered and dumped off the train; Baumeister, who has taken to the air to overtake the train, evades the group in his pursuit.
Hiding in an abandoned building in Berlin, the men face hunger and danger while plotting their next move. While scouting for food, they spot a major chemical plant and, believing a sabotage would permanently hamper the enemy’s war effort, decide to strike it. The operation goes awry when Hollis is wounded again in the ensuing gunfight, and the crisis becomes personal when they are helped by Kaethe Brahms, a member of the underground resistance. Kaethe—Nancy Coleman—takes them to a doctor, and they learn that Hollis has died, a brutal blow that steels their resolve. Kaethe urges them to reach Münster, where her parents and other resistance members can assist in getting them across to safety.
As Baumeister presses the hunt, the crew reaches Kaethe’s house, only to discover it’s a trap: Kaethe’s parents have been captured, and Gestapo impersonators have taken their place. When Kaethe arrives, the ruse collapses and the group must flee across the rooftops. Edwards is shot in the escape and falls to his death, a devastating loss that underscored the high stakes of their mission. Kaethe chooses to stay with her underground network, and the remaining men press on, stealing Baumeister’s car to cross into the German-occupied Netherlands.
With dwindling fuel, their options narrow until they stumble upon a captured British Hudson bomber hidden in a nearby depot, poised for an attack on England. They overpower the aircraft’s crew and take control, though Forrest is wounded in the process. Using the bomber’s guns to clear a path, they fight their way past German troops on the ground, killing many—including Baumeister—before lifting off toward the English Channel. On their flight back, Hammond detonates the bomb aboard the bomber, destroying a strategic German base. As they cross the channel to safety, Forbes and Hammond learn that Jed Forrest is expected to recover from his injuries, and their harrowing mission ends with the knowledge that they have delivered a decisive blow to the enemy—and that the resistance, embodied by Kaethe and her allies, will continue the fight.
