What Happens in The High Bright Sun: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of The High Bright Sun (1964) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Juno Kozani, Susan Strasberg, an American archaeology student, travels to Cyprus and stays with the family of her father's best friend, Joseph Fürst as Dr Andros. In 1957, she witnesses an attack by two EOKA gunmen that results in the deaths of two British soldiers, but cannot identify the killers to the local British intelligence officer, Dirk Bogarde as Major McGuire. Juno soon learns that the fugitive EOKA General Skyros, Grégoire Aslan as Skyros, is hiding in the house, and that Dr Andros has collaborated with the EOKA. Haghios, George Chakiris as Haghios, wants to kill Juno, in part because of her growing romance with McGuire. Haghios arranges an ambush to kill Juno, but she is saved by Emile, Dr Andros' son, who is mortally wounded. Juno escapes and is rescued by McGuire, who brings her to his apartment. Haghios leads an attack on McGuire's apartment, which is unsuccessful, in part because of help from Baker, Denholm Elliott as Baker, a British intelligence officer who had an affair with McGuire's wife. Juno flies to Athens and realises that Haghios is on the plane. On arrival, Haghios tries to kill her again, mortally wounding Baker, but is shot dead by McGuire. Juno is reunited with McGuire.

The High Bright Sun Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about The High Bright Sun (1964): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why can't Juno identify the EOKA gunmen who attacked the soldiers?

Juno witnessed the ambush but was too traumatized by the violence to clearly see or remember the faces of the attackers. The trauma of witnessing two British soldiers being killed left her unable to provide a useful description to Major McGuire, which frustrates his investigation and puts her in danger, as the EOKA fighters know she was a witness.

Q2

Why is Dr. Andros helping the EOKA fighters?

Dr. Andros is secretly collaborating with EOKA, the Cypriot nationalist organization fighting for independence from British rule. He is hiding General Skyros, a fugitive EOKA leader, in his house. Despite being friends with Juno's father, Dr. Andros views the independence struggle as a just cause and is willing to aid the resistance, even though it puts his family and guests at grave risk.

Q3

Why does Haghios want to kill Juno?

Haghios, an EOKA fighter, wants Juno dead for two main reasons. First, she witnessed the EOKA ambush and could potentially identify the attackers if she recovers her memory. Second, and more personally, he despises her growing romantic relationship with Major McGuire, a British intelligence officer who represents the colonial power EOKA is fighting against. Her involvement with the enemy makes her a target in his eyes.

Q4

Who is Baker and why does he help McGuire?

Baker is a British intelligence officer who assists McGuire during the attack on his apartment. His motivation is complex - he had an affair with McGuire's wife in the past, creating personal guilt and a desire to prove himself. By helping McGuire defend Juno, Baker attempts to redeem himself and repay an old debt, though his actions also serve the broader British interest of protecting witnesses.

Q5

Why does Haghios follow Juno to Athens?

Haghios is determined to complete his mission to kill Juno, viewing it as both a tactical necessity and a personal vendetta. After failing to assassinate her at McGuire's apartment, he tracks her onto the flight to Athens. His obsessive pursuit continues because Juno is a witness to EOKA operations and because of his intense hatred of her relationship with the British officer McGuire.

Q6

What happens to Emile in the movie?

Emile, Dr. Andros's son, is mortally wounded while saving Juno from Haghios's ambush inside the Andros house. When Haghios arranges the attack to kill Juno, Emile intervenes to protect her and is shot in the process. His sacrifice allows Juno to escape, but he dies from his wounds, adding a tragic cost to the conflict.

EOKA (National Organization of Cypriot Fighters) was a real underground organization that fought for Cypriot independence from British rule during the 1950s. In the movie, EOKA fighters conduct ambushes and attacks against British military personnel as part of their armed struggle for Enosis (union with Greece). General Skyros is their fugitive leader, and the organization operates through clandestine networks, including collaborators like Dr. Andros.

Upon Juno's arrival in Athens, Haghios makes another assassination attempt. In the struggle, Baker is mortally wounded trying to protect Juno. Major McGuire, who has followed them, arrives just in time and shoots Haghios dead, eliminating the persistent threat. The confrontation ends the immediate violence, though Baker succumbs to his injuries.
