In the snowy Russian countryside of the early 1940s, Vladimir commands a small, weathered squad of partisan fighters operating behind German lines, stubbornly adapting to the harsh realities of guerrilla warfare. When Nina, a timid dancer from a trapped ballet troupe, is brought into their hidden refuge, the group discovers she has never shouldered a weapon, cooked a meal, mended clothing, or learned the basics of survival under fire. Yet her presence unsettles and intrigues the veterans, and she slowly becomes part of the unit’s fragile rhythm. Nina Nina is introduced as someone who wants to belong, even as she questions whether she can truly contribute to a world ruled by danger and duty.

That night, a German scout stumbles upon their hideout but is quickly captured. When he attempts to escape, Nina fires, winning the reluctant respect of her comrades and proving her willingness to stand up when it counts. The following night, the guerrillas target a German munitions train, carrying out a successful sabotage. Vladimir invites Nina to join the mission as part of an informal initiation, a move that blends necessity with a growing risk: the closer Nina and Vladimir grow, the more their personal bond could disturb the unit’s cohesion. Vladimir explains the harsh truth behind his ruthlessness, revealing that, before the war, he worked as an engineer and was forced to destroy the very electric power plant he had helped build in order to deny the enemy a crucial advantage.

The developing romance between Vladimir and Nina complicates the squad’s dynamics. To ensure the safety of crucial information, he considers a female courier to reduce the chance of capture, and chooses the seasoned Yelena, the only other woman in the group besides Nina. When Yelena’s horse returns with blood on the saddle, Nina steps forward and volunteers to take her place. Vladimir reluctantly agrees, sending the young Mitya along with her to deliver Vladimir’s coded message to headquarters. The mission culminates in a pivotal moment when Nina and Mitya reach the command center and relay the vital intelligence. The response to Vladimir’s message is starkly clear: the code reads, “The snow will fall tomorrow.”

Back at base, Vladimir is asked to oversee a merged partisan operation, a sign that the leadership believes a larger, more coordinated effort is now within reach. Yet before the fighting can begin in earnest, he orders Nina to escort Mitya’s younger sister, Olga, to safety, underscoring the perils that come with every personal choice in a war-torn world. The resistance fights with grit, but casualties mount as the rounds keep coming and comrades fall one by one. Through it all, Nina refuses to abandon her new family, returning to Vladimir as the struggle intensifies.

In a climactic moment of solidarity, Vladimir administers the partisan oath of allegiance to Nina as the battle rages around them. Just then, a German tank drives onto their machine-gun nest, crushing the explosives and signaling the brutal end of the stand. The story lingers on the bond forged amid snow, danger, and sacrifice, portraying how loyalty, bravery, and love can emerge—and be tested—under the hardest pressures of war.
