Kammara Sambhavam

Kammaran Nambiar, an ailing old man, lives with his son Bose in Amritasamudram. During World War II, he is depicted as a self-serving medical practitioner who manipulates others for personal gain, including gaining the trust of landlord Kelu Nambiar and associate Robert S. Coogan.

Kammaran incites violence among villagers, rebels, and British forces to eliminate his rival Othenan, during which he kills Kelu Nambiar. Othenan is arrested following the chaos, and Kammaran's manipulations deepen the turmoil.

Othenan visits Kammaran in the night while he is ill, but Kammaran's health deteriorates as he begins coughing and cannot continue his story, signaling the end of a significant chapter in his past.

Pulikeshi makes a film based on a chapter of Coogan's book, depicting Kammaran as a hero. The movie presents a reversed narrative where Othenan and Satnam are traitors working for the British, and Kammaran is portrayed as a benefactor of the villagers.

In the biopic, Kammaran is shown taking actions for the people's benefit, such as looting British money to aid villagers and supporting workers against cruelty. Bhanumathi, who was his love interest, is depicted as his wife, Bhanumathi.

Othenan cooperates with Maheshwari and the British to plot against Kammaran using Netaji's supposed death as a trap, aiming to falsely implicate him in Mahatma Gandhi's assassination, revealing ongoing political schemes.

During the Battle of Imphal in 1944, Kammaran saves an injured Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose from a grenade, earning his trust. Netaji encourages Kammaran to lead a people’s party, symbolized by the axe from his father's murder weapon, to fight the landlord system.

Kammaran forms the Indian Liberation Party (ILP) and plans to protect Mahatma Gandhi's procession routes. He stations his men along the route, and when Othenan tries to assassinate Gandhi during the train journey, Kammaran intervenes.

A fierce confrontation ensues on the train, where Kammaran fights Othenan and ultimately kills him with his axe. This act solidifies his role as a revolutionary fighting against treachery and betrayal.

Kammaran is captured and sentenced to be hanged, but Robert S. Coogan convinces Nehru to save him. He refuses to join elections initially but promises to return when needed, and is eventually elected as the Chief Minister of Kerala, aiding the ILP's return to power.

Later in life, Othenan reappears and visits Bhanumathi, now Kammaran’s wife. Enraged, Kammaran kills Othenan brutally, revealing the deep-rooted conflicts from his past and his capacity for violence against those he perceives as enemies.

Back in the present, Kammaran explains to Pulikeshi that the film has become the accepted history and that actual events no longer matter, emphasizing how history is shaped by narratives rather than facts.
