Jakob the Liar

In the grim early months of 1944 Poland, Jakob Heym is unexpectedly called to the German headquarters. He is falsely accused of violating curfew regulations, thrusting him into a perilous situation.

While waiting to meet the commander, Jakob overhears a German radio broadcast discussing the Soviet Union's military victories. This vital information ignites a transformation in Jakob’s life and the lives of those around him.

Upon returning to the ghetto, Jakob shares the news of the Soviet gains with his friend Mischa. Mischa quickly spreads the information, giving rise to rumors that Jakob possesses a forbidden radio, which is strictly prohibited in the ghetto.

Seeing the spark of hope his news has ignited, Jakob reluctantly embraces the myth of having a secret radio. This newfound belief allows him to weave tales of Soviet victories, bringing joy to the otherwise despondent ghetto inhabitants.

The legend of Jakob’s mythical broadcasts spreads throughout the ghetto, providing much-needed optimism in a bleak reality. His fabrications lift spirits, turning him into a beacon of hope for his fellow Jewish residents.

Unbeknownst to the German authorities, Jakob has hidden a young Jewish girl who managed to escape from an extermination camp deportation train. This act of bravery further complicates Jakob's already dangerous situation.

The Gestapo becomes aware of the rumors surrounding Jakob and the supposed radio. They begin to seek out the individual behind these subversive tales, putting Jakob and his community in grave danger.

When confronted by German officials, Jakob is pressured to reveal the source of his supposed illicit activities. In a moment of bravery, he decides to surrender rather than betray his convictions.

During his intense interrogation, Jakob insists that he merely overheard the radio broadcast. Despite the mounting pressure, he refuses to publicly disavow his claims about the radio and its reports.

In a heartbreaking twist of fate, Jakob is suddenly shot and killed before he can deliver a critical message. His last words reveal the grim fate of his community, highlighting the tragedy of their deportation.
