Nancy appears to have finally taken control by killing Fred, her husband and the serial killer, which seems to suggest she is breaking free from her oppressive life. Her act of violence—that she wields herself—represents her reclaiming agency and shedding the metaphorical and literal chains that imprison her. However, the film leaves us with lingering doubts. The repeated motifs of tulips and the mirage-like quality of the narrative imply that her freedom might be more psychological than actual. Nancy might still be caught in a loop — a doll’s house of her own making, where she’s haunted by her memories, her husband’s manipulation, and possibly her own imagination. Her apparent confrontation with Fred could be an actual event, or it might be a hallucination or a mental break, especially considering how much of the story is filled with glitches, inconsistencies, and surreal details. The motif of Fred’s model diorama and Nancy’s visions point to a deeper theme: the struggle for individual freedom and gender roles within a suffocating marriage. The presence of other possible non-real elements, such as Dave’s disappearance and the missing earring, further add to the ambiguity. Was Dave a real person, or merely a figment of Nancy’s mind? Did Fred’s evil actually exist, or was she projecting her fears onto an imagined monster? Ultimately, the ending is open and unsettling, emphasizing that what we see might not be the entire truth. Nancy’s liberation could simply be a moment of mental clarity or a fleeting fantasy, leaving us pondering whether her misery was ever fully real or if she’s still trapped inside her own mind—a doll trapped inside her personal dollhouse. The film’s ambiguous conclusion forces us to consider whether the cycle of control, illusion, and repression continues even after the final scene, making Holland a haunting reflection on the complex nature of reality and identity.
