Matt Buckner is unfairly expelled from his journalism course at Harvard University after cocaine is found in his room. The drugs actually belong to his powerful roommate, Jeremy Van Holden, who pays Matt $10,000 to take the blame, leaving Matt in a moral quandary.

After the incident at Harvard, Matt moves to the United Kingdom to stay with his sister Shannon and her family. This transition marks a significant change in Matt's life, moving him away from his privileged academic environment into a new and rougher culture.

In the UK, Matt meets Pete, his brother-in-law's thuggish sibling. Pete runs a local football hooligan firm, indicative of the violent culture surrounding football fandom in the area, and reluctantly agrees to take Matt to a football match.

After cheering for West Ham United, Matt is conflicted when Pete and his friends decide to pick a fight with Birmingham fans. Choosing to leave, Matt is ambushed by rival fans but is rescued by members of the GSE firm, showcasing the violent underbelly of football culture.

Matt earns his place among the GSE firm after successfully defending himself in a fight against Birmingham supporters. His acceptance into the group marks the beginning of his deep involvement in the football hooligan scene.

Despite not being invited, Matt sneaks onto a train headed for Manchester with the GSE ahead of a major match. When they discover an impending encounter with the ManU firm, Matt uses his quick thinking to help the group evade a confrontation.

The GSE successfully tricks the ManU fans by pretending to be van drivers for a film crew. Taking advantage of the moment, they leap out and surprise their rivals, leading to a chaotic and victorious brawl.

Matt learns about the GSE’s rivalry with Millwall, led by Tommy Hatcher. This enmity stems from past violent encounters and personal tragedies, and the tension escalates as Bovver, driven by jealousy, makes reckless decisions.

Bovver’s jealousy leads to a betrayal that puts Matt in danger. After witnessing the tension among the firm members, he informs their enemies about Matt's ties to Steve, leading to an all-out clash.

The Millwall firm launches an attack on the Abbey pub, leading to destruction and personal confrontations. Tommy Hatcher seeks revenge against Steve for past events, resulting in a brutal and violent encounter.

An all-out brawl between the GSE and Millwall takes place near the Millennium Dome. Amidst the chaos, Matt and Bovver spring into action when Matt’s family is threatened, showcasing the clash between personal and group loyalties.

In a tragic turn during the brawl, Tommy Hatcher kills Pete after a heated confrontation. The shocking moment halts the violence and leads both sides to gather around in disbelief, illustrating the harsh realities of their lifestyle.

Matt returns to the United States, seeking closure regarding his past. Confronting Jeremy Van Holden in a bathroom, he uses a tape recording as leverage, reclaiming his power and symbolically closing the chapter of his life in the UK.

The film closes with Matt walking away from the confrontation with a sense of victory. He leaves Jeremy defeated behind him, singing 'I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles', which symbolizes his newfound liberation and self-acceptance.
