The movie opens with Gabriel, an angel whose job is to keep people from texting while driving. He watches over Arj, a hopeful yet strained filmmaker who misses a big opportunity and contemplates giving up. Gabriel's perspective shows moments of quiet intervention above a parking lot where Arj sleeps in his car after a tough phone call.

Gabriel meets with the other angels led by Martha. He feels overlooked compared to higher-ranked angels like Azrael. His small wings reflect his lower status, and Martha counsels patience rather than a quick promotion.

Arj lands a new job through TaskSergeant and ends up working for Jeff, a flashy tech entrepreneur. He cleans Jeff's garage while Jeff performs his cold plunge routine, and Jeff is impressed enough to promote him to assistant and hand him a company credit card.

Arj and Elena go out for tacos where he reveals he edits documentaries in his spare time. From above, Gabriel observes their growing friendship with mixed astonishment. The moment hints at a budding romance alongside Elena's focus on workers' rights at Hardware Heaven.

Arj takes Elena to a fancy restaurant, and the bill climbs to over $300. He uses the company credit card to pay, prompting Jeff to confront him and fire him. This marks a turning point in Arj's employment and pride.

Arj donates plasma to make some quick money and ends up sleeping in a Denny's. A tow truck arrives for unpaid parking tickets, and his TaskSergeant account is terminated due to inactivity and saturation. Gabriel reveals a possible future life where Arj becomes a delivery driver for a company with rigid deadlines.

Gabriel shows Arj that a richer life is possible by altering his reality. He wakes up in a nicer car in the same parking lot the next morning, and the security guard who once kicked him out is polite. Jeff is now his assistant, Elena is reintroduced, and they return to the fancy restaurant where the server impressively comped their meal.

Gabriel's meddling in a human life backfires. Martha strips Gabriel of his wings, leaving him mortal. He begins living among humans, working a modest Korean restaurant job and discovering the realities of human labor while also enjoying junk food like chicken nuggies.

Arj throws a party while Gabriel, now mortal, is visible to guests with limited powers. He tries to use his influence on Jeff, which triggers Jeff’s memories to come flooding back. Jeff discovers the switch and demands Arj give him his life back, but Arj pushes back, explaining the complexities of the new life.

Arj proposes a weekend trip to Paris with Elena, but she prioritizes organizing a union at Hardware Heaven. Their relationship strains as Arj appears dismissive of her labor activism. A distracted moment while driving leads to a car accident.

Arj falls into a coma after the accident. Jeff and Gabriel search for him, and Gabriel is fired by Martha and made mortal. He begins a three-job routine at a Korean restaurant, a motel, and elsewhere, and he also discovers how people like Felipe struggle to support their families and starts to appreciate human pleasures like junk food.

Arj awakens and learns that Jeff and Gabriel have been looking for him. He pretends to have amnesia when Jeff visits, for fear of losing his new life. Jeff loses his job as a result of the company switching to robot deliveries, and he attempts to regain some advantage by stealing Arj's old watches, now worth a fortune.

Back at Hardware Heaven, Elena gives a rousing union speech, but the proposal fails after widespread dissent. Gabriel, still mortal, bonds with Felipe and his wife at a salsa club, showing that human connections can inspire hope.

Arj hosts a final party, and while Jeff and Gabriel crash at his place, Arj ponders the value of both wealth and human relationships. He and Elena reconnect and enjoy tacos, while Gabriel, now still mortal, contemplates the cost of his interventions. The two decide to revert to their original lives, with Arj waking to a familiar world but carrying new insights.

The film ends with Arj and Elena sharing tacos again, while Gabriel’s invisible hand lingers over the moment, symbolizing a lasting, if imperfect, hope found in ordinary life.
