Underwater Dreams

Two passionate high school science teachers make a brave decision to enroll their Title I school into an underwater robotics competition. This choice aims to inspire their students, many of whom are living in poverty, to embrace science and innovation.

Initially, only four boys sign up for the competition, but their excitement ignites a sense of community among the students. They reach out to oceanic engineers and military contractors for help in designing their underwater robot.

The team learns that the high-tech materials required for their robot are far beyond their limited budget. They decide to use PVC pipes and duct tape from Home Depot, showcasing their resourcefulness and determination.

After several test runs, the aspiring engineers feel hopeful about their robot, affectionately named Stinky. They prepare to travel to the competition, filled with a mix of excitement and nerves.

Upon arrival, they are met with an intimidating atmosphere, dominated by college teams in matching uniforms and advanced robots backed by major corporations. The boys realize the daunting challenge they are up against.

During their initial test run, the team discovers that their PVC creation is not watertight. Stinky begins to leak and ultimately sinks, leaving the boys feeling defeated and anxious about their prospects.

In a moment of camaraderie and creativity, the boys brainstorm an unconventional solution using everyday items. They decide to use eight super-plus tampons in a humorous bid to stop the leaks in Stinky.

After a night of hard work, the team lowers Stinky back into the pool, now equipped with their makeshift leak stoppers. To their delight, the robot stays afloat and performs exceptionally well during the second test run.

As the competition unfolds, the underdog team continues to impress the judges with their remarkable ingenuity and perseverance. They captivate audiences, proving that determination can lead to success, regardless of their background.

At the conclusion of the competition, the results astonish both the participants and the audience. The team of undocumented Mexican boys achieves what many considered impossible, earning their place among the competitors.
