Gabriel, Keanu Reeves is a low-ranking guardian angel whose job is to keep people from crashing while texting and driving, yet he longs to save lost souls—the realm of another angel named Azrael. To satisfy this craving, he quietly watches Arj, Aziz Ansari, an aspiring documentarian who takes odd jobs, shuffles between a hardware store shift, and lives out of his car. As days pass, Gabriel grows curious about Arj’s choices and the life he’s building.

Arj begins dating Elena, Keke Palmer, a coworker at the store who is trying to organize a union to improve conditions for workers. During deliveries, Arj crosses paths with Jeff, Seth Rogen, a wealthy tech investor who hires him as an assistant. Jeff pushes Arj toward a suggested, supposedly affordable restaurant for a date with Elena, but the bill surprises them with its steep price. When Arj uses Jeff’s company card to cover the meal, Jeff promptly fires him.

Afterward, Arj discovers the app that once paid him has banned his account, and he turns to donating plasma to make ends meet. He drifts into a nap at a Denny’s and wakes to find his car has been towed for unpaid tickets. Feeling he has reached rock bottom, Gabriel steps forward, showing Arj a vision of a future meant to spark hope. Yet Arj reads that vision as bleak, and Gabriel explains that money and fame won’t heal his pain, so he proposes a dramatic swap: Arj and Jeff will switch lives to test whether wealth really changes everything. Arj agrees to the switch, and overnight he becomes Jeff—wealthy, powerful, and in charge—while Jeff becomes Arj’s assistant.

Gabriel’s bold move is discovered by Martha, Sandra Oh, his supervisor. She reprimands him, stripping away some of his angelic powers by taking his wings, a punishment that leaves him almost human-level limited. At a party later, Gabriel confronts Arj and helps Jeff regain his own memories. The trio discusses the arrangement, and Arj ultimately agrees to switch back after a few more days, but he refuses to financially support Jeff again so Jeff can understand Arj’s life firsthand. Gabriel accompanies Jeff as they relocate to a motel and try to cobble together income sources.

Arj reconnects with Elena and begins a renewed romance, but she ends things when he implies her union work is unimportant. While driving and texting Elena to reconcile, he crashes and falls into a coma. Jeff and Gabriel struggle to make ends meet, eventually sleeping in their car. Martha fires Gabriel, who becomes human and takes a job as a dishwasher, finding the work rhythm and the daily grind challenging.

When Arj wakes from the coma, he pretends memory loss to avoid switching back with Jeff. He’s fired as a delivery worker when the company switches to robotic deliveries, and Jeff hatches a plan to sneak into Arj’s home to fence his expensive watches. The two arrive at Arj’s birthday party just as the party is underway.

At the party, Arj runs into Elena, who reminds him that being rich isn’t the only thing worth fighting for; she continues to pursue her beliefs even if it doesn’t bring wealth. Arj soon discovers Jeff attempting to steal the watches, and the ruse about his memory loss is exposed. In the hospital, Arj agrees to switch back, but Gabriel insists that the change will only work if Arj truly desires to return to his own life with genuine hope—not born from guilt.

Martha visits Gabriel and explains that people can inspire hope in each other; they don’t have to bear the burden alone. With a new sense of purpose, Arj, Jeff, and Gabriel head to salsa night with Elena and her friends. Arj admits fear about returning to his old life, but Gabriel shares how he found meaning through human connections and pleasures, encouraging Arj to embrace the unknown. Reassured, Arj willingly switches lives back to his own. He is momentarily transported back to the moment after his car was towed, while Jeff returns to his normal life.

Back in his own life, Jeff uses his influence to push for better treatment of gig workers—higher pay and stronger benefits—embedding a sense of responsibility into his company. With this renewed purpose, Arj begins work on a documentary about gig workers and continues his growing relationship with Elena, as Gabriel watches over them with a quiet, hopeful presence.
